I don't often read just one genre and was thinking of starting into Sci Fi.
But I have no idea where to start. I had thought Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy?
Any suggestions?

Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card.
Hands down the best sci-fi book I've read.

Don't know if this could be classified as sci-fi or not but Anne McCaffrey's Talent series is very good.

I have always loved the short stories of Isaac Asimov and Ray Bradbury.
I loved the Dune series, also.

I could write fave authors and stories all day.
But I'll just give ya a few to start with.
The Classic Masters of Sci Fi.
Robert Heinlein
Isaac Asimov
Arthur C. Clark( think Space Odyssey 2000)
One of my personal fave authors. He did Sci Fi and great horror and made it look easy.
Theodore Sturgeon.
Philip K. Dick
Piers Anthony( he does a lot of fantasy too)
Ursula K. LeGuin(she's great)
Philip Jose Farmer
Cordwainer Smith
Edgar Rice Burroughs
Harlan Ellison(he's too dark for some people. I think he could school Stephen King on how to do horror LOL)
Roger Zelazny
That should keep you busy for awhile. And there's a lot more out there. You'll find some you like better as you go.
Oh I forgot about Anne McCaffrey's Dragon series books. I started reading those as a kid and was hooked. I started with "The White Dragon".

I think of Edgar Rice Burroughs as the GRANDFATHER of sf. I like his voice.
I moved over to fantasy, as I felt that alot of the more recent sf writings were hard on tech and short on character.
I like the Honor Harrington series, and I think it's free.
