It's figuratively hitting someone over the head with a 2x4, kind of like knocking sense into somebody.
It's being honest with advice, even if it feels like scolding.
Sometimes a person does a 'gentle 2x4' because they want to help but they don't want to be too tough in their response to the poster.

What does AP mean?
I think it's affair patner but that didn't make sense in all the threads I've read.

Copy it. Paste it to the reply box, highlight it, click "quote" on the left of the box. Or just put [***quote]before it and [***/quote] after without the ***
