#6 I will not gloat over my enemies' predicament before killing them.

#7 When I've captured my adversary and he says, "Look, before you kill me, will you at least tell me what this is all about?" I'll say, "No." and shoot him. No, on second thought I'll shoot him then say "No."

As per The Incredibles, these both fall under the category of Monologuing.

"We're Aaaaanimaniacs! Dot is cute and Yakko yaks..." Hard not to be in a good mood once that song comes on.

Anyway back to the thread!

Definitely monologuing, which sounds suspiciously like procrastinating. Part of having Evil Overlord credentials is to show no signs of being a softie. Also noticed that several of those points reference letting your enemies grow up in order to smite a "worthy adversary". Um, no. Doing it decisively just increases the intimidation factor, and a good Overlord is all about intimidation. Except for that point about wearing jovial colors... Joker might have been onto something there...

Back to geekiness thanks to silverhopes.

There is something special about the first two SW movies that was lost in Jedi (beyond the lack of Ewoks).

The first two SW movies had a lot of classy British actors, especially amongst the Empire. Think of Moff Tarkin played by Peter Cushing. Truly creepy to watch someone with impeccable manners blow up a planet, just in time for tea.

Contrast that with Jedi and how suddenly nobody had the accent or manners anymore, and the Empire had taken a giant bottle of Windex to the previously gritty fleet, cuz you know, we're losing the war so we better give everything a spit shine so we at least look good doing it.

I would liken Peter Cushing's Moff Tarken to Anthony Hopkins as Hannibal Lector, with his own moral code. Much scarier to realize that the killer is motivated by a strict morality you do not understand than merely by some random urges.

Your mileage may vary... in accordance with the prophecy.

Very true. Very effective acting.

Curious - you mention the first two Star Wars as having that quality. Not "Return of the Jedi" as well? What was different about that one?

The empire all lost their accents and discovered windex for their suddenly clean and free of space grime fleet, Ewoks, the big musical number at the end. True evil is more concerned with accomplishing things of substance than selling toys to children. Oh yeah, a high tech mechanized army with no restraints on their rules of engagement is not going to lose a war to furry stone age midgets, especially not when they have air support and control the orbital space. Essentially a lack of adult supervision on the word processor.

Remember, no true villian ever thinks of themselves as evil. The sole redeeming point of the Episodes 1 through 3 is showing Darth Vader becoming what he is with good intentions all along the way. There was even one of the Star Wars games where you played as a stormtrooper. You were supposed to be fighting to preserve order and extinguish a rebellion by the anarchistic rebels.

Ah OK. At first thought you meant that for the prequels... Yeah, I did think the Ewoks winning was ...surprising (hah!)... but chalked it up to them knowing the terrain better.

IMO, they fucked that up too.

Darth Maul and Count Dooku were pretty cool though.

Are you sure you mean the Empire with the clean thing, btw? cuz the Death Star in ep4 was pretty shiny and the Star Destroyers in Empire were too. The Rebel stuff went from grimy to gleaming in RotJ though. It's like they put Ackbar in charge to state the obvious and hire janitors.

I'm excited about eps 7-9. I really liked what Abrams did with Star Trek, and Disney taking over means the movies can be "kid friendly" without being "adult stupid." On Stranger Tides was a decent enough film adaptation (though the entire Pirates series was drawn from the book, which was inspired by the Disney ride.. it's a conflux of awesome) and it managed a good balance between "family adventure" and "what the fuck did that fish person just do"

Oh, people - not that I don't agree with all the geekiness in here already, but...

How did this thread get to 3 pages with no mention of Hitchhiker's Guide?

Or LOTR?

Monty Python?

And for most any sci-fi film made, you have to be able to say, "Yes, but the book/short story/novella/comic was better," and then list out all the ways the film deviated from the original story line.

Think "I, Robot" or "Jurassic Park".

ETA: I've never been able to get into Dr. Who, but loved Torchwood, though I still haven't seen Miracle Day yet.
