What is involved in keeping them up, anyway?
Not all dreads are created equal. There's the natural dread where you just grow your hair and don't take care of it.
Then there are regular dreads. You twist them and get them retwisted as new growth comes out.
Then there are sisterlocks. It's a very skinny dread that looks almost like a microbraid or a slightly larger hair strand. Very high-maintenance to keep them looking good as there are so many of them, but since they are so small you can style them almost the same as individual strands of hair.

I think dreads are cool! They remind me of Bob Marley and peace and love and freedom and open-mindedness (all this from a hair style, lol), and how can anything that reminds me of those things be bad?
DS, you are forever in my heart. Thank you for sharing your beautiful spirit with me. I will always try to live by the example you have set. I love you and miss you every day and am sorry you had to go so soon, it just doesn't seem fair.

It's all in how well you take care of your dreads. I work at a college and I've seen both extremes. I can remember one young man that you could smell coming in the door downstairs and across the building - no lie, it made your eyes water and it was difficult to hold a conversation with him. We've got students now (male and female) with both short and long dreads and they are gorgeous. Go for it!

Exactly.
I bought a cool rasta type hat yesterday. If I could grow dreads to go along with it, I'd be happy

I think this thread would be cooler if the title was changed.
Perhaps:

I like dreads. Wouldn't get them myself but I think they look great on some people.
My old highschool boyfriend was just starting them when we broke up. I just saw him the other day at a store for the first time in maybe 20 years.. and he still has them. Think of the growth there. I was stunned. I also hid behind a display of cheesies to avoid him but that's another story

LOL Jrazz.. yeah it's really not too interesting. I just don't talk to exes. It's a boundaries/marriage thing and we like it that way. Unfortunately it sometimes necessitates diving into a wall of snack foods and making the shush face at ones children.
And yeah broevil.. he had them tied up a bit but they were waist length.

Yeah I would probably vote not to dread, that is unless previously mentioned you are a Predator or at the very least one of the Pirates of the Caribbean.
Unfortunately my experiences with them have always been people of the smelly dread clan who's hair fasion statement looked like something I needed to cut off my dog's rear end.
But if you can rock it, then more power to you!

Oh No!! I wish! My hair is way too short to do it now! I'd have stubby little dreads sticking out every which way.
But I love the colors in that pic.

From a different angle, if my W dressed like the picture, I don't think I'd focus on her hair. I mean, I'd still notice, but....

My opinion is fat dreads, dreads of varying thickness, dreads that join together, dreads of different lengths.... are creepy, make me think the person is filthy, etc. Totally turns me off to the person.
But! Well done dreads can be cool. A good friend of mine has lots of pencil thin dreads, keeps them neat, tight to the scalp, even length, etc. Occasional bead tips, or a ribbon wrap. I really like them. But they look kempt, not unkemped and dirty or lazy appearing. To me they seem like braid alternatives, not matts of grossness.
But I think it takes a lot of class and style to wear them and not get pigeon holed into "druggie, homeless, dirty" at first glance.
