Detox?

Ok, so I've been doing a TON of stress eating. I feel sluggish and gross. I've been thinking about finding some kind of Detox or something to cleanse my system. Now that the weather is warming up I'm also going to try and get walking more to try and lose weight.

So my question is: What is a good detox/cleanse to buy. Is there a tea? I love tea.

Thanks in advance for the advice.

I have never seen any physician that recommends a cleanse. I'll stop short of saying they are hoaxes, but they certainly aren't healthy, even if done for just a day. Your best bet is to eat plenty of fruits and vegies with moderate amounts of protein and whole grain carbs.

Tea is great for you, but not as a substitute or cleanse. Black, green and white-all are good. Even coffee in moderation is good.

There is a lot of junk science out there; be careful.

You are important and you matter. Your feelings matter. Your voice matters. Your story matters. Your life matters. Always.

Having had to *cleanse* for a colonoscopy, it isn't something I would do unless I had to... Which will be in about 9 yrs!

Try cutting down/out processed foods, sugar, etc. The body really cleanses itself. We just need to nourish it correctly.

Wish I could practice what I just wrote. I,too, have been on quite a binge of late and know exactly how you feel.

Thank you Sad and Lucky. This is why I posted here. There is so much on the net that I'm not sure what is right and what is wrong.

I guess cleanse is the wrong word. I just want to get all the garbage out and feel better. I want to lose weight (target weight is 155lbs)

Stupid question of the day: What would be considered processed foods/sugars?

Dinner for tonight is a roast chicken, with mashed potatoes, and mixed veggies (frozen, not canned)

I would say any food in a form other than how it was created by nature is considered processed.

So, corn on the cob or in the shell..... natural, as long as it is just corn, no sugar added.

Corn tortilla chips? Processed.

Whole apple - natural

Applesauce or apple juice - processed.

Just some examples.

Agreed that most of the "colon cleanse" is at best useless, and at worst harmful. The body does an excellent job of "detoxing" itself, given the right support. Chicken is pretty lean, so that's good (skin off, though). Mashed potatoes is something I might try and find a sub for. Too much starch, too little of anything else. Worse if you add in a ton of butter, cream etc. Drink plenty of water. I usually feel better if I cut down on processed food and drink water... but who has the time these days?

Good luck!

Best description of "natural" foods (low processed) I have heard was, "if your great grandmother could not buy it, you should not eat it"

Rules out most junk food.

Disclaimer: I do not follow that rule, but I do think it would be a good one.

Thank you all for your input. There is a tea I saw at Target. I think the brand is Yogi (yellow box) and it says detox on the front. I wasn't sure if that was good or if it would work.

I'm definitely going to add more fruit & veggies to my diet. That's the easy part, I love fruit and veggies. I've just gotten far, far away from that. I love yogurt. I can only drink ice water (colder the better).

I try to eat lean meats as well.

My thought about processed foods is that isn't all food processed in some way or another?

I like that description, Pentup.

If you can go out and pick it straight from the tree, ground, bush, vine and stick it in your mouth... it is not "processed"

SD - if drinking water is a problem try adding lemon juice to the water... it's helped me up my water consumption and all I drink is water and coffee.

I have been taking bentonite clay for a few years now daily and it does help detox. It helps turn your colon into a better detox organ, to take the work load off the liver and kidneys so they can do their job without being overwhelmed.

I have also taken spirulina and chorella (probably have spelled these wrong) and they have helped me feel much better as well, but they are something if you choose to take that you start off small and then slowly build up to recommended amounts.

My experience with cleansing is to go slow, do not overwhelm your system, the toxins have to get out but flooding your system is dangerous.

You can do great slow cleanses with food, fruit and veggies, adding juices, adding sprouts, etc.

I have done parasite cleanses, liver cleanse, colon cleanse, kidney cleanse, have done water fasts and juice fasts. I am more than willing to share positive and negatives if you are interested.

Simply - the rule of thumb I like re: processed foods is this: can you make it in your kitchen? Note, that's not WILL you make it in your kitchen but CAN you.

For example - peanut butter. Look at the ingredients on your jar of peanut butter. If it has "peanuts, salt" then yeah, you could get a grinder, grind up some peanuts and add some salt. Not too processed. But if it has a bunch of chemicals in the ingredients, or crap you don't even know what it is... Then how would you go about grocery shopping for those ingredients to make it yourself?

Sooo... A hot pocket, I couldn't make that. But prepared hummus? As long as it has ingredients just like chick peas, lemon, etc... Yeah, I could make that. Frozen veggies, canned beans (again, as long as they don't have strange additives) may seem "processed" but I could make those at home... So I consider them minimally processed in a way that's acceptable.

It's late, hope this is making some sort of sense. Good luck in your quest! :)

Got rid of a lot of baggage, moved across the country, and am moving on with my life!

Nature_girl, what is that do?

jrc, I'll have to try lemon. Water just gets boring after a while. The only way I can really drink it is if it's very cold. I typically drink cranberry juice. Maybe add a little cranberry juice for flavor?

Crescita, I'll have to look that up.

Violet, that does make sense. I also try to stay away from canned foods because of all the sodium and preservatives. I read all the labels and try to get the "healthiest" I can find.

Thank you all for your responses. This is all great information.

It's just a nicely flavored water. There are probably some health benefits from the citrus, plus the mint & fennel make your tummy happy. I honestly think people forget that probably the best way to "detox" is to up your water intake. Any health regimen you get on will recommend that you drink lots of water. When it's yummy, naturally flavored water then it's easy to follow that regimen.

Google "spring cleanse" and you'll find lots of tasty flavored water recipes. They're very popular right now. Very easy to prepare, you just need a super large pitcher.

I just read an article on how doing juice fasts can trigger eating disorders. There are loads of people who no alternate between indulging one day and juice fasting the next. Which is really bad for you!

You're better off just eating lots of fruits and veggies in addition to whole grains and lean protein. AND drinking plenty of water.
