So I'm headed to NOLA on Wednesday. SO EXCITED! I've been Yelping the place to death but wanted to hit my uber wise SI family to see what tips, suggestions, etc., you have for me. I already have Cafe' Du Monde bookmarked for beignets, and ACME Oyster House for their grilled oysters. So, bombs away!!!

Have fun! I was out in January, and got good tips from SI'ers - one of our favorite things was Frenchman Street. Lined with live music joints, and you can just walk along and listen at the door to find one you like. Ended the night at Checkpoint Charlie's, which DS suggested to me...dive bar/laundromat.

Only drawback is the food is so rich and you want to try everything, after 3 days we were completely sluggish.

Muffalettas at Central Grocery.

Frenchman St is the way to go. Preservation Hall is an awesome experience. Lunch at Mothers is great. Acme and Cafe Dumond round out my must do's every time I go to New Orleans.

Make sure you wear cheap and comfortable shoes...a couple pairs of white canvas tennis shoes and you'll be grateful you can just throw them away later

And CheckPoint Charlies is so much freakin' fun...total dive/local hang out...you can visit their little library, do some laundry and listen to live music all in one stop

Live music-Tipitina's and Carrollton station-uptown

Po Boys-Domilise Sandwich Shop & Bar, Parasol's Restaurant-uptown

Mandina's on Canal for lunch or dinner-mid city

if you are doing classic (old school NOLA) fancy dining-Arnouds Restaurant, Galatoire's are in the quarter-but there are plenty of others that are new, post Katrina

Small cigar/jazz bar - dos jefes in uptown

it's all about food and music (and drinking)

I highly recommend Central Grocery on Decatur - you gotta have a Muffaletta sandwich!

And Cafe Du Monde, of COURSE.

Southern Candy Makers on Decatur St,near the French Market makes some of the best pralines and has other yummy sweets! Hope you have fun!

Everything said so far is a sure bet.

If your budget can afford it, Commanders Palace or Mr. B's are truly fine dining. NOLA is one of Emerill's restaurants and in my opinion the best of his three in town. Would be a difficult choice to say which of the three above to visit.

Court of Two Sisters has an awesome breakfast/brunch menu.

Camellia Grill is a whole other experience. Very reasonable prices and the food is great. Think of a diner.

Enjoy the humidity while you are there. The French Quarter has a wonderful aroma of puke and urine. You will never smell that smell anywhere else in the world.

I've only been once, 2004, the year before the hurricane. We partied it up, ate so much, did the river cruise, which was FUN, it was such an incredible city - loved it. I SO want to go back - but when I do I definitely plan to check out more of the art galleries near Bourbon Street.

You HAVE to go to 2 different places.

1st is Court of Two Sisters for their brunch. Incredible food. You will not be disappointed.

2nd is the Marigny Brasserie on Frenchman Street. It's just outside the French Quarter but it's so delicious.

You won't be disappointed in either. Have fun and I'm so jealous!

Love New Orleans. Also love jazz and blues, but was disapointed that after Katrina some of the big box boys took the opportunity to encroach on the local places. Snug Harbor and Preservation Hall are still great places to go though. Also the Jazz Museum is great and they still have a couple of wonderful old fashioned record/cd shops operating. The Lousiana Music Factory has live performances that they often record in store and they are big fun. Congo Square where the slaves used to gather and play the precurser of modern jazz is right on the border of the Treme. Tour books all tell you to avoid the area, but I never had a problem and going in the daytime should be no problem. Watch out for the hustlers that are everywhere on Bourbon Street and outlying areas though. If somebody bets you they can tell you where you bought your shoes, walk away as quick as you can lest you fall prey to a scam. I am pretty street wise, but got hit up last time I was there even being aware of the scam. The guy talked so fast and started polishing before I had a chance to react, then he wanted $10 per shoe! Prior when I stayed in a not so great hotel bordering the Treme up Canal Street while walking the gauntlet of hustlers I was asked for $20 so a guy could get something to eat! I am aware of and generous with street folks, but this was beyond the pale, and I just laughed and told him I could not afford the inflation rate and continued to walk! Be aware, but if you stay alert everything should be fine and you will have a great time. Oh yeah, summertime in New Orleans is very hot, be prepared!
