Honestly!!! I have spent almost the entire day on the end of a garden hose or shovel fighting the 1 acre fire in my next door neighbors yard.

I was just getting out of the shower & I smelled wood burning smoke. "THAT'S not right" I look out bathroom window & there are flames shooting up the neighbors trees.

I shouted fire all over my house, told my daughter call 911-get ready to leave with the kids, threw clothes on, woke my husband & ran. It was full blown 1 acre fire & it scared the shit out of me. I wet a rug & started smacking flames out. Other neighbors had beat me with garden hoses. I called for my family to get ours. My family is not much help in crisis.

My neighbor, 6 years ago filled his yard with wood chips. Now those wood chips are 6 inches of saw dust. Not kidding.

Fire department emptied their truck, they were coming back with foam. They got a call of another fire. They did come back with foam but it did not cover 1 acre. There are still patches sprouting up. I'm on break right now.

The fire started by other neighbor over, chain saw. The tree he was sawing up burnt. It was the sawdust from tree which caught on fire & out of control so quickly.

After awhile I was spraying fire with garden hose, bawling my head off because I really didn't need to have shit scared out of me. I just sprayed myself down & pulled it together.

Ok. I'm gonna go check the burn now.

I hope not! to the snake bite. Probably all the snakes left when the fire started??

Some people are just good in a crisis. You sound like one of those.

We are rural. There are snakes. Somewhere. I keep an eye out!

The burn seems to be out. Thank God! Finally.

I wanted to strangle my husband with a cape when he didn't put out effort to get more hose. It took awhile for him to understand this was so dangerous because of the sawdust!

My little neighbors came home. It is 91 YO guy with his 71 YO son both barely get around on walkers. I was laughing hysterically at the son shouting to his dad, neither can hear, "Well yes something DID happen back there! They leveled the whole yard with a cat! See where they broke the fence down!" it was funny. George, the 91 YO still didn't quite get it. I'm glad they weren't home.

Just to be safe, I would try to set up a fire break with the sprinkler. That shit can smolder underground for a long time before flaring up.

Seriously, though, glad everyone is ok, and it sounds like the damage was probably minimal compared to what it could have been.

Here's hoping things calm down for you for a while!

That is funny OsxGirl. I wish I could have recorded the little old guys coming home. They are both on walkers, huge ears & shouting at each other. The son was so pissed off because his dad was like "what? What are you talking about?"

Aesir, I do know that. The yard was the worst fire hazard & it was not comforting I knew more about fire than 19 YO volunteer. Scary.

From this, I met some neighbors & 1 neighbor who doesn't like us, I talked with them. I ask her, "were you afraid?" she said yes. I said me too. I think it will be better now. We all worked hard, together.

I did go look this morning & 3 trees will have to come down. Ranging 40-50 feet. I hate taking trees that big out. Dang it! They aren't mine but still good trees. ;-D

Some native trees in California are adapted to fire and can resprout new growth from the branches even if the leaves are all burnt. What kind of trees are they?
