I have had many, many first days of school. Both as a student and as a teacher. Today, however is my daughter's first day of school. I've been fortunate enough to stay home with her the past few years (and will continue to stay home until my boys start school God willing). I'm excited for her. She's at a great school. They are committed to creating a community and believe that helping students develop a zeal for learning is more important than teaching them to regurgitate facts. I believe in them 100% (I used to teach there and might be a little biased, by they really are awesome). My daughter is smart and extremely social and I know she is going to flourish. Still, I'm sad this morning. Just another spot where she doesn't need mom anymore. Just another change in our relationship as she grows into a wonderful human.

I know many who have felt the same way when their kids went to school. I was a bit more celebratory of it. It is so good for them, and was good for me mentally as well.
Yesterday my kids had their first day, and it was a bigger day for me than them. My Son drove to school for the first time, a JR. this year. My daughter started her first day of high school. It is exciting and nerve wracking for them and me both. But each year they are growing into wonderful people who will soon be indepenedent, and off to college.
It all goes by so quickly, I just try to enjoy the big moments, and remind myself that soon they will be gone.

She told me her day was 'great'! Every other detail had to be pried out, but she was exhausted. Actually got upset at her brothers for being loud and keeping her from a nap rather than being upset because she had to take a nap.

Every new school year, I'm sad that they're getting bigger and less dependent.
But there are good things too.
