After peri menopausal hell, combined with what happened to me Sunday, I was poking around on the internet, and found some info about being magnesium deficient. It seems that a lot of the things I struggle with were on the list of symptoms.

Headaches

bad cramps

insomnia

back/neck pain

irritability

short term memory loss

then moderate:

tingling numbness muscles contracting, and rapid heartbeat.

I bought a powder form of supplement and started it yesterday. I did my research, so I think what I have is good. I don't know, might be my mind playing tricks on me, but I already feel better, and slept better, even though I am in my PMS phase right now.

You'll probably poop better too.

You don't want to over do it but it can be a real good thing for all the things you mentioned. Tush (who's advice is always so great on this forum) can probably give you some good info on it.

SSM,

I was told 25 years to take magnesium oxide, by a heart doc, for a rapid heartbeat.

I also learned that if taken at the earliest hint of a migraine coming on, will lessen the severity, sometimes knocking it out completely. Why? because it relaxes muscles.

As for sleeping better, you bet it does, again because it relaxes muscles.

I take 500mg daily, as ordered by my doc, and if I start having rapid heartbeat or palpitations, I kick it up to 1000mg TEMPORARILY!

Caution! High doses will have a laxative effect!

Do not take more than the recommended dose, unless following Drs orders!

I'm doing it on my own. I've come to believe that my doctor is an idiot, and it's time to find a new one that is actually interested in LISTENING and helping me through this weird phase of my life.

I am following the instructions, starting out with a very small amount (tsp) and splitting into twice a day. It says to add more very gradually until you find the right dosage - measured by stool softness...

I'm really hoping this is a good all around help for me.

Yes Magnesium can help with some issues, and some folks seem to be more sensetive to it being low than others.

*****CAUTION******

Make aboslutely sure you have Magnesium Oxide, NOT magnesium sulfate. Mag sulfate is what is Milk of magnesia, and Those green bottle of laxative that you drink to cleanse your colon. YOU DONT want that. That will make all you levels low, sodium, potassium, and magnesium being the big three.

Honestly if you are concerned about perimenopause and all the other issues you should make sure all your normal labwork is normal, including thyroid. Elevated HR that is a new thing for you is concerning to me. Something is triggering that, and needs to be examined. Please get a new Dr if you don't have a good feeling with this one. That is very important to have one you feel listens, and seems to know what they are doing.

IN addition, since I'm not a Huge fan of all the supplements, and herbs that tend to be popular I would say that you should take a daily multivitamin, and if iron doesn't constipate take a prenatal, add to that folic acid, and vitamin D. cut the crap out ofyour diet, including most caffeine (rapid heart beat), and see if you don't feel a bit better.

Magnesium glycinate is my favorite form . It's more absorbable than oxide and you get the benefits of glycine which is used in detoxification and its also used as a relaxing neurotransmitter.

Magnesium is deficient in most people and its used as a co-factor in in more than 300 enzymatic reactions.
