As someone with a family member who was very negatively affected by the flu shot (confirmed) I can only suggest that everyone do their research and make the choice that is best for them, which in the overwhelming majority of cases will be in favour of getting the flu shot.
Those that don't or can't may also have very valid health reasons for not doing so, and I don't think others should judge their choice without the facts.

This.
As a nurse I have been giving flu/pneumonia shots for awhile now. If you are able health wise to get your vaccines then get them. The flu shot does not give you the flu. If you become sick after the shot it is not from the shot. You were already sick or you caught something else. The flu vax does not cover all flu. The pneumonia shots we are giving protect against 23 types.
Not all, so you have to still use precautions.
Flu hallmark sign is a rapid, sudden, onset of a high fever, body aches, fatigue. Go to the doctor or ER ASAP if you have these, get on Tamiflu in 48-72 hr of fever onset.
Well I hope the outbreak misses my area.

Flu shot screening includes questions for allergies, including eggs, etc. The shot is killed virus and can't give you the flu. If you're allergic to an ingredient and didn't know it then you could have a bad reaction.

They are saying it's killed several people in Houston. I did get my flu shot and was paranoid but ... I think the shot is going to protect me.
Um well ...

Right. I am saying my husband is healthy, young, not allergic to eggs, etc. He has no valid health reason for not getting the shot except he SWEARS the shot gave it to him once (the flu) and I am saying that is not possible. Unless he got the mist, but he did not. He got the shot which is a dead virus.
I think he had already been compromised when he got the shot and therefore, he did get sick. It can't protect you if you've already been exposed.
My dad is a hospital administrator and he always warns me to get the shot. He sees all the bad cases, all the deaths.
I think the majority of the people should get it. Obviously, the very young, elderly or immune deficient people should do more research/get doc approval.

It makes me crazy when people refuse to get it, because the "got it once and got sick from it".
Or because they are concerned about Vaccine issues.
A few bits of information. The Vaccine CANNOT make you sick with the Flu. I often believe if folks get sick after they get the shot they were exposed to some bug or another while getting the shot, esp if they go to a vaccine clinic, or to the Dr's office to get it.
You are exposed to sick people when you go to the Dr's office, the Pharmacy, and health clinics.
Please folks seriously consider getting you vaccines.

I used to regularly get the flu shot. But I won't be so quick to get it in the future. I'm watching my vibrant, active mid 70s mother going through a health crisis due to getting the flu vaccine. Within 48 hours of receiving her flu vaccine in November, she developed such pain throughout her body and in her joints that she could not get out of bed without help and once out of bed it hurt too bad to even climb back in. What has happened is a known flu vaccine reaction called reactive arthritis. Google it and if there is a risk of arthritis in your family or you already suffer from arthritis, take heed. However, My mother was NOT an arthritis sufferer, though her mother was. Apparently there's a higher risk if you do have arthritis.
She is in agony and this shows no signs of abating. The only thing that gives her any relief are rounds of steroids but this is obviously not something she can take on going. Her quality-of-life is so reduced and she is suffering depression from the chronic debilitating pain. She is so mad at herself for getting the shot.
It is definitely a personal decision but certainly weigh your choice carefully because reactions are real and they can be worse than a sore arm or a bit of a fever for a day or two. My mother is two months into this journey that might possibly never end for the rest of her life. She has doctors appointments every week looking for solutions. Her next stop is a rheumatologist. She went from perfectly fine, healthy, active and fit to basically incapacitated in the span of 48 hours.

DB, I'm so sorry to hear of your mom's bad reaction to the flu shot. That's awful. I have heard of other similar stories.
Equally horrible is purplejacket's patient dying of the flu in 48 hours. Terrifying and tragic. I am so sorry.
In an ideal world we would all get genetic testing to see how we would respond to the flu shot as an individual. This could screen out those likely to have a bad reaction. Unfortunatly public health is concerned about the masses, and ramming a one-size-fits-all protocol down everyone's throat. Or in everyone's arm. The government and the medical establishment have made terrible mistakes in the past, is it any wonder that there is mistrust?
I for one am not entirely sure the flu shot actually stops people from getting the flu. I've seen numerous reports from the canadian cdc to other reputable doctors raising questions about its efficacy. Not just wacko conspiracy theorists. There doesn't seem to be good data supporting flu shots. Dr. Mark Hyman here is just one example.

I personally know many people who do get sick after getting a shot. I get that the virus in the shot is dead, but not everyone's immune system responds to stimulus exactly the same and some people are weakened by the flu shot. Then they succumb to the next cold bug or other flu bug that is probably already living inside them. After all we are all walking around with viruses, pathogenic bacteria and cancers in us but our immune systems keep us healthy until something challenges it that is just too much.
In an indirect way I do believe the flu shot is responsible for many people getting sick.
I've just seen it so many times.
For myself I choose to I focus on vitamin D, healthy eating, plenty of sleep, stress reduction, and hope for the best. So far i only get a cold once every two years and no flu in the last 14 years. Knock on wood.
I would hate to have a job where they forced me to get a flu shot or face losing my job. That is going way too far.

The one and only time I ever got the flu shot, I got sicker than crap. I won't ever get it again. Every year before and since that shot, I barely got sick. I won't ever get one again.
I think...therefore, I'm single.
It is what it is.
