Severe tendonosis, and 4mm tear in supraspinatus. There is more in the MRI report but that's the basics.

Questions. Do tears ever heal on their own or with acupuncture? Is it true that cortisone shots are damaging in the long run? Should I avoid heat packs or massage, both of which give me temporary relief, I don't want to cause further damage...Are anti inflammatories useful for healing BEYOND the minimal pain relief I get from them? Finally, is surgery always needed?

As I said, I want to be as educated as possible before speaking to my doctor, who is NOT an orthopedist. I suspect she will refer me on....

Anti inflammatories for the tendinitis, rest for the tear as in get a sling rest.

I torn my rotator cuff, worst pain ever, couldn't sleep, it hurt all the time, got some meds and wore a sling for 6 weeks. The pain stopped the minute the Dr. put my arm in the sling, I cried I was so happy, almost kissed him I was so happy.

Thanks, Sadone! It does hurt, especially at night, which is why I'm posting at midnight... Hope I get in to the doctor soon.

Partial tears can heal enough to avoid surgery.

I tore the labrum (cartridge) in my left shoulder in Oct. I used NSAIDS , ice, range of motion exercises, and pain meds. Wore a sling for two weeks then started PT. Did two months worth and I'm doing very well. If it had been my dominant arm I wouldn't have been satisfied but since it was my left I'm very pleased and avoiding surgery.

Acupuncture probably won't work to heal the tear, but it probably will help with the pain.
