Sports Illustrated will be featuring Barbie in their swimsuit addition of the magazine.

Personally, I am horrified at this.

1) It never occurred to me now that my daughter’s toys could be essentially porn dolls for my husband. Thanks for putting that thought in my head SI!

2) Sexualizing a child’s toy is totally creepy. And YES- I know that there are adults who collect Barbie, but I’m thinking that the Barbie collecting adult population is NOT the target audience for the SI swimsuit addition, call me crazy.

3) Don’t people argue all the time that Barbie is just a toy, and that girls shouldn’t feel bad about themselves because of an 11 inch doll? Well put her next to sports illustrated models wearing basically nothing, and you essentially send girls that EXACT message- that barbie’s body is sexy, these girls’ bodies are sexy, and if you have a couple extra pounds on your body or a scar or a mole or something- well, you’re not sexy.

4) Now, when I go to the store for the next month and a half, I get to listen to my 5 year old girl whine at me and beg to get the “Barbie magazine.” Once again, thank you SI!

What does everyone else think?

More same old same old unfortunately--women get objectified, prettified, turned so unreal in media, in order to satisfy a male gaze that only cares about looks and devalues who people are. It's so sad and really seeps into everything.

1. I don't read Sports Illustrated. Never have and never will.

2. Barbie, is not a big deal in my opinion. My daughter likes the toys, and that's all they are.

They don't set a standard.

I was against my daughter getting Barbie at first but my WW was ok with it.

3. Barbie is not even close to what a real woman looks like.

4. You think it's bad that women are being objectified, yes, but it's real bad that men/young boys are being told that this is what a woman should look like and being treated like.

A toy...Used for fun now...Have to get some accessories for her once in a while...then you throw her away when you out grow her and reminisce about the memories you had. That's the sad part. It tells them that message all hidden within the context.

...Imagine if they put GI JOE action figures on the cover of Playgirl.

As a former athlete, this irritates me. There are plenty of female athletes who look AMAZING...different weights, shapes and heights...I think featuring them would be better. ONE, they actually have something to do with sports. TWO, the different body types are more realistic to real life.

My good friend and I cut out all the bathing suits/girls in the swimsuit edition H received while we were dating. lol

As for Barbie - I think it is ridiculous to put a fake woman in the magazine

Gee, I wonder why 90% of women in the US have body image issues? I'm not saying Barbie in SI is the sole culprit, but it's definitely a symptom of how media screws women over. Royally.

Look! Now they don't even have to waste time air-brushing, bc their model is plastic to begin with!
