I wish I was one of the lucky people crossing the bridge into the Upper Peninsula today.

I haven't been there since 2005-- but spent 30 years going there before my D.

I will cross it this year if it's the last thing I do

I would need Xanax just to ride across that bridge, blindfolded, with an angel driving. Wayyyyy to scary!

WarehouseGuy, have you ever crossed this bridge in winter time? Thanks for sharing, I love it! I want to go there!

We've crossed it in winter, but never in bad weather. My brother went to school in the UP, and when it was bad they used to send the cars across next to semi trucks

Pentup, every Labor Day there is a bridge walk. You can walk across it with a few thousand of your closest friends

Jeaniegirl,

I have crossed it in the winter--and was sent over next to semi-trucks just like WH5 mentioned. It's a spectacular view any time of the year.

I live about 50 miles south of the bridge and have been over it many times. As Warehouse Guy and WH5 said, it's an amazing view.

I attended grad school in the UP and did some consulting last winter in which I had to travel over the bridge several times. Crossing in bad weather is not good, but the rest of time time it really is not that bad. For one thing, no one ever, ever exceeds the 45 mph speed limit and most are driving well under it. I find I'm more comfortable if I'm doing the driving.

Outrage! The website for this bridge falsely asserts that it is the longest suspension bridge in the Western Hemisphere--ha I say--and point you here for the actual reigning US champion suspension bridge:

(Measurements apparently go by the central/main span between the towers, not the total length)

WarehouseGuy, do they use the ice breaker boats there at the end of winter? I had the privilege of watching the ice being broken up under the Blue Water Bridge at Port Huron ... and loved it!

I hope to get up to 'your bridge' after a trip to Ontario in October. If you go in a few weeks, post pictures!

My cousin and my uncle do the bridge crossing every year. I'd love to sometime, just was never there at the right time.

My grandparents had a small cottage on the beach west of St. Ignace on US 2 W. The property later passed to my mom and dad, aunt and uncle. Spent a lot of time up there in the summers.

Jeannie,

They have to use the icebreakers to get it open in the straights. The boats they use are stationed about 20 miles S of there. I've seen them up close in the summer. Very cool.

Nora,

I think the website needs to be updated. I know it's not the longest--and hasn't been for quite a while.

Want2

I've done the Labor day bridge walk 4 times. It sure gives you a whole new perspective when you aren't going 45mph and watching the road.

When I had my place in the UP--once I crossed--I still had 145 miles to go.

Now I'm not going until the end of the month. I guess I'll just have to look at that bridge on the website until then.
