Ok- I have about 2 inches of grey roots on me. I am 47. The next set of inches is the color I had originally got at a salon. I simply can't afford these days to have someone cut and color my hair.

Enters CVS. I bought today on sale Garnier Nutriesse #20 for $7 - affordable if I don't screw myself up. I have never done anything like this.

I need advise.

I used Feria by Loreal. Hair dye in a box is really pretty easy. Don't sweat it, just follow the directions - oh and be careful about spilling - that stuff stains even the darkest of cabinets.

I like to put vaseline or lotion on my skin along my hairline so it doesn't stain too badly.

I'd also invest in a brush like professionals use. You can pick up at a beauty store. I think it gets it distributed better.

Beware of getting too much on your ends, my hairdresser says they're drier and suck up more dye than the rest of your hair.

I grew mine out and have rocked the salt'n'peppah for years now.

Nothing wrong with going au naturel and the maintenance is so much easier.

Try to start with your roots & hairline, then work the color through all your hair. Where you're starting with a new color, you'll want to do kind of hybrid application between a re-touch & a new application. (I'm just going off experience, no formal training here!).

I've gone from semi- to demi-permanent color...that way, if I decide to grow it out and find out what color my hair is these days, I can. FWIW.

I only put color on my roots, I don't bring it through my hair. I put conditioner on my ends before I color.

I'm about 75% grey and went all blond several years ago to hide the gray. I had a professional take me to blond, then I've done the upkeep every since. BUT, I was a natural blond kid and have never had really dark hair, kinda mouse brown as a teenager.

I use Nice and Easy medium neutral blond.

"warm" means it will be reddish

"Cool" means it will be ashy

"neutral" is somewhere in between and works for me. I don't like the red tint in hair color, it doesn't work with my coloring.

I know my hair, and experimented enough to know not to leave the color on as long the box states. I leave it on like 12 minutes, which is enough for MY hair.

Don't expect it to be perfect the first go 'round. It takes practice and experimenting!

I used to use that hair dye. It was fine. Then I tried the Ion line at Sally's and found that it lasted longer.

I know that you're supposed to do the roots first, but I just blob it all on. Whatever difference there is in the coverage of the roots as compared to the previously dyed hair is minimal, and I use a darker shade.

I just hope it last longer than tonight!

How long do these kits last?

Should say on the box if you've still got it sitting around glad it went well for you.

I have been coloring my hair so long I forget what the natural color was. Anyway, I found the color lasts longer if I use shampoo and conditioner for color treated hair.
