I have the Olympus one. It was the most expensive one Best Buy offered. Don't buy it. The directions are indecipherable. Someopne with a grasp of the English language did not write them. I am very technically savvy, and never got it to work right. Don't buy Olympus.
If any of you have an Olympus and have hints, let me know. I think my 13 year old might be up to something, and a var would be great!

Sony yes for sure I have the 733 version... Didn't know about the bit rate! Thanks! Beyond all this now though...
A few points to add: you don't have to do the cut off ear bud thing... Just turn the play volume all the way down, should the play be inadvertently hit. It doesn't effect record fx.
And make sure all button beeps, background lights, ANY lights, are set to "off". I have found memory space to be a bigger issue then battery life... And yes, you get to hear the radio... That was interesting to me and if the news is on it's a nice time stamp since the VOR setting has time started recording but not the actual time in the car.
I have always just put the thing deep down in the pocket behind the front seats... Never was discovered thank god but always worked well and it's an easy in/out.
Lastly... Be prepared for what you might hear. This is crucial because for me at least, I never got a smoking gun but heard enough to make me question things I didn't expect. A VAR is the most valuable item i have had and easiest and least detectable to clarify who my man really is. It provided odd clues that didn't make sense to me at the time but have given me pieces to a very disturbing puzzle.
Good luck... Remember all lights and beeps off! And Never Ever reveal this source, no matter how much you uncover with it.

I got awesome ones from Brickhouse Security. Not cheap but voice activated. Looks like a regular USB. battery when fully charged lasts about 12-15 hours of talk time.

Cajun- do you know if the Sony recorder requires downloading software to a PC to pull the audio files? Or can you just move the audio files directly to a flash drive?

I've been thinking about VAR the last couple days. Don't think you can get them quite as cheap in the UK but will definitely be looking into it.
WH seems to phone the number I'm suspecting quite early in the day - so on the way to work. Just need to figure out the logistics.

I've thought about buying one to put in his car. I'm not sure it will do much good since his job requires him to use different vehicles and most of the time calls are made when he's not in his car. Plus, I'd never be able to know what's said in person. I thought about getting one that looks like a pen and giving it to him but he's so horrible about losing them. With my luck he'd lose it the first day and I'd be out $100.

Is this not against the rules? We are not suppose to talk about investigative until a certain amount of posts have been reached...and we have a specific section for that too.

I'm sure everyone before me has told her all the ins and outs so I will just say this...
If it were not for my VAR, I'd never had been able to truly appreciate what an ass my ex is. A bizarre and twisted ass. The var gave me little snippets of puzzle pieces over a period of two years, only used here and there, many pieces didn't mean much at the time but now as I step back and look at the pieces, it is clear. And infuriating. I never really knew the guy.
You might not get quick answers or a smoking gun out of the gate. Then again you might. Just prepare yourself for whatever you might discover... And make sure you never forget the importance of keeping it quiet. Do not divulge its existence...
Good luck

Please be cautious.
Some states only permit recording of conversations if both parties consent, most only require that just one party to the conversation must consent. With a hidden VAR neither party has consented so the use of the VAR is illegal.
One of my children recently got divorced and relied in part on information obtained with a VAR placed in the WS car to obtain custody. Now, just post divorce, the WS and the WS's attorney have turned the issue over to the district attorney. My child is now awaiting trial. This is a felony and carries a punishment of 2 to 12 years in a state prison.
Carrying a VAR in your pocket is OK. A hidden VAR is dangerous.
