Two days ago I went outside to smoke and scared a duck out from under the bushes next to the house. It didn't go far--just flew into the neighbor's yard. I thought it was injured or sick.
I just went out and it's back with a mate. I scared them both and decided to look in the bushes. There is a nest with 3 eggs in it.

Hi WHG
We started with about 6 and now have about 50. FWH then progressed to chickens and geese. All up we probably have over 100 birds - but I stopped counting a long time ago.
When I saw your post I thought you might be interested.
I am so happy that you are going to be a grandfather. Congrats!!! I hope you enjoy it.
For your interest I have included some pics of FWH's ducks.
I sincerely hope your grandchildren are pretty too.
Your grandchildren may look like this:
Perhaps they will grow up to look like this:
or this
Have fun - I think we all need to enjoy the simple pleasures

It is cool--and ducky
Unfortunatly I think I may have to evict them
They are literally 6 feet from a door that get used many times a day. And once those eggs hatch---anyone coming out that door will most likely get attacked by some very pissed off parents. I can't have that here.
There is a lake about a mile from here that is full of ducks--and I'm surprised these two chose to raise a family in my back yard instead of over there with all the other ones.
I'm guessing that it will be 4-6 weeks before the ducklings will be able to fly away. That's not gonna work for me. I don't need friends and family attacked every time we go out to sit on the patio.
Sorry if that sounds cruel--but I think it's for the best. They can go raise a family elsewhere.

eta: The third picture is exactly the type of duck that moved in. Thanks for the pics Laura

Careful WHG - there are laws about disturbing the nests of migratory birds. I wouldn't want you to run a-fowl of them.

They may be fine there. I don't think they'll attack. I used to work at an elementary school. We installed a "native pond" right at the main entryway. It was very protected because of the building layout. Anyway, a couple of ducks have been nesting there and having ducklings almost yearly for the past 10 years. The kids know not to mess with them, and there hasn't been an incident to my knowledge. Their nest was about 7 or 8 feet from the door.
Let 'em be. They'll adjust.

Growing up we had ducks nest in our backyard (no where near a lake). We had 2 dogs and a bunch of cats. The ducks defended against the cats and left the rest of us alone. Once they were hatched and up and around the nest was abandoned. I am assuming for swimming lessons.
You may be fine.
Post pics if you can...

WHG,
They should be fine where they are. The adults will become accustomed to your family.
They will also make an excellent early warning system when people come to your house.
Besides.....they're cute.

I doubt you will have a problem. We have ducks living in our ditch/front yard and they never seem to cause a disturbance. Neither do the geese. In fact they hardly notice me.
This photo was taken a couple of days ago with an iPod without using zoom because I was so close.
