I have to carry my phone everywhere.
I was just outside to enjoy the cool air (and fog over the ground) and went to the back yard. I heard a noise and turned to look at what appeared to be a bushy tailed cat staring at me. Just as I was thinking "Hello Kitty" it moved and I could see the white stripes and decided it was best to walk away. It started to scamper towards me with that silly hop, not unlike Pepe Le Pew. I stepped across water filled ruts in the back lane, and it was forced to take a different route and lost interest, going to check out something else.
I decided I would go to the street in front of the house instead, and trotting down the street was a fox.
I swear I don't live out in the boonies, it is a nice suburban neighborhood just outside the city where every lot has a house built on it.

I don't imagine you would have stopped to take a picture of that little striped kitty...
For future reference, there's a thread in OT dealing with the aftermath

Well, since you posted this in fun and games, I think we should add to it...

Cool! I came home from work late at night and saw a mamma cat playing on my front lawn with a few of her kittens and when I squatted down and held my hand out to see if they were friendly, it turns out they WERE friendly, but were mamma and baby skunks! They didn't spray me and didn't even seem remotely bothered by me. One little one sniffed me (this is when I realized it was not a kitten) and weirdly the mamma didn't care at all about me. Didn't look, didn't run away, wasn't fazed. Cool!
edit: DH tells me from childhood escapades that they don't have good eyesight so aren't too fussed unless you scare them.

My dog once tangled with a "striped kitty" who sprayed him in the face.
I will never forget how he screamed! And rolled his snout in the grass...and cried.
It is NOT easy to get a dog in a tub full of tomato soup either.

The fox was probably trying to get away from the striped kitty too.
It makes it hard to eat mices, squirrels and birds when they can smell ya coming.
LOL. I heard a crash bang outside the other night, I had a skunk trying to chew the honey off of some old frames that had just a tiny bit of honey on them. She was trying to drag the frame into the woods, and caused a pile of old bee boxes to fall. Silly skunk.

One summer when I was a camp counselor, there were signs all over the camp site that said Please don't feed the skunks.
I thought this was rather odd until later that nite when the camp counselors were up late playing spades by kerosene lantern on one of the picnic tables... and a "cat" wound through my legs...
Apparently prior to the sign posting, people DID feed the skunks and they got quite comfortable around people! We were careful not to startle them with any sudden movements because it turned out there were three or four searching under the tables for food...

I used to have two outdoor dogs and lived in the country. One hot summer evening, a skunk wandered into the yard and caught the attention of the dogs. Since they were barking furiously I went to look out the window to see what the fuss was about. Dog #1 had the skunk in his mouth by this point. Heading to the house to show it off. I mentioned it was hot, right? So every window and door was open, hoping to catch a breeze. You never saw two people move so fast to slam windows and doors shut, simultaneously screaming at the dog to "sit" and "stay." Then we had to run outside to close down the garage as well. My whole house and my car stunk like skunk for at least 2 weeks. I suspect every piece of clothing I owned stunk for just as long but my co-workers were too nice to say so.

What time of day was this??
Current weather?
Was there maybe a larger predator they were running from? Like a bear?
aesir (original poster member #17210) posted at 3:54 AM on Wednesday, June 26th, 2013
This was just before I posted this thread.
No larger predators, one was back yard, one was front yard, and the skunk was literally doing the Pepe Le Pew bounce towards me. The fox may have thought of me as a larger predator based on how he looked back at me as he trotted by. I think a predator may have been more inclined to go after the baby geese or ducks that are not a part of this story.
I don't imagine you would have stopped to take a picture of that little striped kitty...
Actually, I reached into my pocket to fumble around for my phone and realized it was on the charger in the house.

Ahhh.. early in the morning. I see... You're going to see stuff like that at that time of day. You don't have venomous snakes, do you? If you do, you'd also be likely to see THEM at that time of day.
Why so early???
aesir (original poster member #17210) posted at 4:36 AM on Wednesday, June 26th, 2013
Awake, was hot, cool out. Very humid day, hence the 3 feet of fog on the ground.
No venomous anything here. The winters kill them.
