Once again I need to call on the collective wisdom of SI.

For the past 3 mornings (early mornings 3am) my DS9 has woken up with bloody noses. One was bad enough that I had to strip his bedding and wash his pillows and sheets.

I've only had 3 bloody noses in my life so I really don't know why this is happening or how to stop them.

What could be causing them?

This time of year? Allergies

I had nose bleeds so bad when I was a kid I had to go to the ER.

Spring and summer were the worst times for me at least.

Both of my DS's get them too.

Thanks ima! He doesn't show any other signs of allergies, so I guess this is his. Poor kid. Why couldn't it just be itchy eyes

Restless sleeper...

Could be any number of things.

My DS gets them all the time just like I used to at that age.

The Dr once told my mother I had thin membranes in my nose and that's why I got them... I used to get them from sneezing or just rubbing the outside of my nose because it was itchy.

DS got one on the bus going to his field trip a couple of weekends ago... came home looking like a crime scene. Scared the hell out of his chaperone.

I wouldn't worry too much. Unless they intensify or increase in frequency.

I vote for allergies as well. My oldest DS has had nosebleeds in his sleep off and on for years. It seems to be mostly a function of how much dust is in his room.....

It's probaby allergies, but you may want to let his dr know. Have you tried a saline nasal mist? It cleans the nose and moisturizes it. It's been a big help to us.

I used to get spontaneous nosebleeds all the time when I was a kid. I still get them on occasion (no allergies here).

What really helps with the dry air/nasal passages is to run a humidifier in his room at night.

I used to get them all of the time. My guess was dry air. I started keeping a large bowl in my room cuz I didn't have a humidifier. Currently, I have a 10 gallon fish tank in my room. It seems to do the trick. I haven't had a nose bleed in years.

my 12yo had the same thing a month ago for almost 3 nights in a row. I didn't have a clue. This solves the mystery! simply - I hope the suggestions help!

Thank you for all of your advice. I will try the saline mist and humidifier. When I woke him up this morning he told me he didn't have a bloody nose. That made us both very happy. We had the ac on last night, I'm not sure if that had anything to do with it.

AC tends to dry air out. Which is good when dealing with mold and other allergens. If you have been having the windows open a lot before then my vote would be pollens are the irritants. Bloody noses due to dry air tend to happen in the winter.

It has been so nice here lately that we've had the doors and windows open. We probably let in a lot of pollen.

My daughter had a blood vessel very close to the surface inside her nose and would get spontaneous nosebleeds often. Dry air, allergies, just about anything would set it off.

We had it chemically cauterized. Which didn't hurt her at all and she never had another one. Something you may want to keep in mind in case this becomes an issue due to frequencyl

Usually a combo of things that cause it, allergies, dry air, and surface vessels. My DS and sister had them a lot as little guys. I found coating his nares with some petroleum jelly, or A&D ointment prior to bedtime for a few nights, allowed the tissue to be moiturized, and the vessels to heal. DS will still get them occasionally, and he does the treatment on his own now.

If they become chronic, and recurring you probably need to see an ENT they can use silver nitrate sticks in the office to cauterize the vessels. (doesn't hurt, tickles).

notme & TN, now that you mention it, my cousin had that done when she was younger. That is something to keep in mind.
