Sudden Color Blindness

DS17 came home last night from snowboarding and told me that he is having trouble seeing colors - specifically reds and oranges. He said it just started yesterday. I asked him if he hit his head and he said No. I asked if he fell snowboarding and maybe didn't think he hit his head and he said No he didn't fall at all.

He said he started noticing it on the drive home and couldn't tell the light was red (other than knowing it was on the top). He said it looked blue. At first he said he thought maybe just that light, but then noticed it the entire drive home - trouble with the red and yellow lights. He said they looked green and blue.

So I started testing him on things that he wouldn't necessarily know the colors and he got all the reds and oranges wrong.

Have you ever heard of such a thing?

No I haven't. But my first thought was snow blindness. You know when you go outside on a really bright snowy day and come in and can barely see? Something like that. If he was on the slope all day and it was really bright, maybe he did some temporary damage?

Go softly my sweet friend. You will always be a part of who I am.

Let me guess he didn't have sunglasses on out in the snow?

If it's not better today then take him to the eye dr. It is really really important to protect your eyes when they are exposed to that extreme brightness for any period of time.

He burned his corneas and this is the result. He will be fine in a few days. I did that in college also.

However, he is putting himself at risk for macular degeneration. Please google and discuss it with him. It's not ok to wear just any sunglasses. You need the ones with UV protection. And in the snow wrap arounds like goggles are needed.

He was wearing his goggles and helmet. He is still complaining about it today so I asked him to stop into the school nurse before I call the doctor and set up an appointment. Just seems odd - he snowboards all the time and this never happened before. Up until this year he was a snowboard instructor.

I googled it and some of the stuff they say is scary. Why oh why do I google things

This absolutely me.

I know he told you he was wearing the goggles, but do you think he might have just been telling you what you wanted to here?

Yes I was wondering the same thing....

Just seems so strange to me. I never wear sunglasses - not even at the beach or driving. I never wore goggles skiing unless it was really snowing and I didn't want snow in my eyes.

I am going to hold out for a day or so and then call the doctor if it doesn't come back by that time. I found some tests on the internet as well so I think I will give him one of those tonight.

Maybe I will wait to see if how he dresses in the morning - if his clothes start not matching....

Ophthalmologist IMMEDIATELY.

It might be snow blindness.

Or it might be something much much worse.

My son has a brain tumor. He has trouble distinguishing red/orange/yellow, among other problems. That was one of the eye tests he flunked that helped us get him diagnosed. It came on suddenly. His current oph. has told him and us that ANY change to color perception is a serious issue.

Get him assessed right now.

and please let us know what happens, trustagain. Hoping it is something minor and temporary.

ETA, I'm really serious here -- if you can get him seen by someone tonite, do it. If you can get him in tomorrow morning, do it. If your insurance needs a referral, take him to his usual doctor NOW and get the referral NOW.

You do not want to feel guilty if it's something bad. Nothing lost if it's minor.

Just sayin. BTDT.

Add me to the list urging you to get him to a doc ASAP.

I hope it is something minor, but with certain things (eyesight, function of organs/limbs/fingers/toes), I like to err on the side of caution.

He went to the doctor on Thursday and the doctor doesn't seem too concerned, but he is having a MRI on Tuesday.

DS says that it does seem a little better, but I am still planning to take him for the MRI. Better be safe than sorry is my motto.

The MRI didn't show anything which I thought was great news, but this past week has had ups and downs. He can still see color, but now occasionally has blurred vision and says the room spins, then he feels motion sickness. He says the vision is blurry for about 10 minutes, then the room spins and then he feels nauseous. He says he it feels like his eye balls move to the outside of his eyes and he has to force them back straight.

So back to the doctor we went. The doctor is perplexed. He was going to send him for a Catscan, thinking that maybe he was having migranes, but he isn't having headaches and no vomiting.

Tuesday we are seeing an Opthromolgist (sp). If he doesn't see anything, I don't know what is next after that.

The doctor was calling in other doctors into the office. All of them stumped. They did balance tests, eye tests (vision), urine - all were good. The only thing he could write the script for is "altered vision" . He didn't know what else to call it (his words).

I have not googled, cause I am scared to see what I may see.

I googled for you, trustagain.

I just keep coming up with optic neuritis, which is something I experienced back in '06, right before my MS diagnosis. MRI *should* pick that up, though.
