I absolutely, positively, will not. The fact that I am an absolute skeptic is not the reason either.

My brother visited one some 30 years ago, and she proceeded to tell him that if he stayed doing what he was doing (nothing bad, relates to career choice) he was going to die. It shook him up; to his very core. He left what he was doing, relocated to another state, and died in a tragic accident within a year...

So yeah, won't go near one with a ten foot pole...

But to each his own!

OK, mandatory skeptic lame party pooper here:

Psychics are very talented. But this means really that they are experts at doing very non-supernatural things:

* "Cold readings," where they throw out a bunch of suggestions and are very sensitive to your body language and tone of voice to know if they're getting to something true about you. They can then use that as a bridge to speculate about the future, which of course you can't disprove.

* Vagueness that sounds specific. Kind of like horoscopes, statements that sound like they really know you but apply to just about everyone.

* Fraud: using plants or shills in an audience or figuring out how to research the subject beforehand to know things they "couldn't possibly know." If you are a repeat customer it's very easy.

Anyway, have fun with your readings but don't be defrauded.

I'm sure there are those who employ those techniques. I have had really bad readings as well. Where I have ended the session, and refused payment.

My recent experience was not fake or fraudulent in any way.

I had never met the woman, she had no idea who I was, and could not have researched me. I didn't even give her my full name (I have a very long last name, that most of my family shortens--I go by the long name, but I gave the shortend version). And she knew that. She said "You don't go by this name, your name is much longer."

She also repeated to me, word for word a conversation I had with my mother, on the phone, in my home before I left for this appt.

I know there are fakes out there, looking to scam people, but I do not believe I was scammed at all. She knew things. She told me private things I said to my Nana before she passed. She told me that my Nana heard me talking to her about my fertility woes, and about my getting married woes. And I did...the night before my appointment.

I feel lucky that I got to meet with someone who was genuine.

My sister went to see a medium today. She just texted me a moment ago. My grandmother wanted me to know she loved the eulogy I gave at her funeral. It was last month. The medium doesn't know me, or my sister, or that my grandma died, and there is no record anywhere that I gave the eulogy.

I don't know. Maybe I just want to believe it. And that's ok too.

With regard to September 11, 2001, there are some who say that Nostradamus predicted the catastrophe in the early 1500s. There are people who had weird feelings who didn't go to work in the towers that day.

I don't believe in coincidences.

You are important and you matter. Your feelings matter. Your voice matters. Your story matters. Your life matters. Always.

Just once. A old friend of mine did it, she predicted the month I would fall pregnant and the due date of my second child, she was right. She also said the baby would be overdue but not by much, he was born two days late. Even I didn't know that stuff because I wasn't pregnant at the time I saw her!

She also said there would be some bad feeling surrounding the pregnancy but not to worry, it would work itself out. My husband was devastated that we were having a second son, he wanted a girl, but once the baby arrived he was smitten!

I'd love to see another one but there aren't any around where I live.

Bingo! I have wondered that about 9/11 and other events throughout history. Why weren't they completely predicted? Maybe they can't always get that stuff right. I won't go to one. My high school friend did and she has a long life line in her and was going to do this and that. She died six months after we graduated high school. I've also known people that were completely predicted correctly to a tee, but don't want to take the chance of finding out wrong or of knowing something I can't change. To each their own, though. I do find it interesting.

I've seen a few for fun. Early in our relationship, I went to one at a Psychic Fair and my husband was with me walking around. The psychic was adamant, to the point that she shut off the tape recording, so that he wouldn't listen to it and told me that he wasn't the one for me. That it wasn't going to work out. I didn't take note of it because everyone who knew him said how great he was. He was quite upset about it and it bothered him for a long time. Knowing what I came to learn about him, I think I should have listened to her more at that time.

I went to another one during the time that can't be mentioned in this section of SI. She explained what was going on in his head very well. So much so that when his head had cleared and he listened to the reading, my always skeptical husband who belittled the thought of psychics, went to see her himself. She told him things about my health and my emotional state at that time that were accurate too. He was impressed. She was very good, but more of a codependent psychic because she'd give you more information about your partner than about yourself.

I went about 8 years ago when I was first starting my plumbing apprentice. The physic told me that I would be wearing a white hard hat. In my province all plumbers were blue hard hats. In the years following I have moved, changed hard hat colours a few times depending on the company I worked for and about six months ago I got promoted to a white hat which is the boss colour in my current company. If the power of suggestion helped make that happen then right on! I would go again for sure.

Wrt to 9/11...I don't think psychics necessarily have globally predictive abilities. I know with myself, I often "know" things about strangers, but not until I meet them. For example, I started with a new IC last week. Never met her, didn't know anything about her (except her creds.....I found her on the internet, just picked her out of a bunch of listings). I literally only knew her name, office address, and that she is an LPC. When I walked into her office, I blurted out, "How was North Carolina?" She was flabbergasted. She had just returned from a week's vacation there.

I don't do "readings" or tarot or anything else. But for some reason I often know things about people I shouldn't know. So I believe there are people that are "psychic". And I also believe there are frauds. Like others have said, if someone is charging you, take it as entertainment. Because you never know.

Since this is OT and not F&G I will say there is no such thing, definitively. I will not say that about God, or any religious entity, and if anyone wants that particular discussion it's a PM because I don't want to break rules, but psychics are, every single one, not psychic.

In fact I would cheerfully sue any that tried to give me psychic advice without the "For entertainment purposes only" in small print because anyone who sells that service as anything but entertainment is, IMO, an awful person for taking advantage of people who are looking for help and hope.

I feel confident in saying there is no such thing because I am happy to take up any challenge otherwise. I won't even take a cut of the millions of dollars available for anyone who can prove those powers.

Please do not look to charlatans. If you are religious and find comfort in your faith, just cleave to that.

I thought I would share my experience too.

When I was 22 I went to a psychic who had a good reputation for being accurate.

She deals a regular deck of cards for the reading.

Anyway, she told me that my mother was having an affair with a man who lived overseas in another country.

That 2 families within our family would break up because of this affair.

That my parents were going to get a divorce.

Everything she said happened!

1 week later I found out that my mother was having an affair with her sister's husband who lived overseas.

Both my parents and my aunt & uncle got divorces.

That is pretty accurate !!

I may or may not agree with you. It's also possible that is the first time I have seen the phrase "I would take umbrage with that statement" used not only without irony, but effectively in an unscripted discussion between real people. So, win all around.

BrokenButTrying:

My friend predicted many things about my pregnancy, too! She was the one who told me to take the test, that she thought or "dreamed" I may be pregnant (I was, I about died).

She predicted it would be a girl, and was 1 oz wrong on weight (albs, 12ozs of baby). When we told her our future DDs name, she said "She is going to have red hair." I said "No, noe one in FWH's family or mine has red hair, we don't have the genes for it."

Fwh then said "Actually, my grandmother had red hair before it went white…"

Our DD has red hair.

I've thought about it for sometime. I'm a Christian so I think I will stay away from it for now. I just don't want to hear something have no control over. It's true that they do have some powers and abilities. But I'm not ready to start on a path I cannot understand. I however, have nothing against those who consult with them.
