I've read just about everything this guy has written, I find his earlier work to be much better than his more recent stuff.

My top faves of his were The Stand, The Talisman, It (I still have issues w/ walking over sewer lids), and the Green Mile.

The Shining was one of the few novels I have ever read that made the hair stand up on the back of my neck. I read it as a teenager, and I can remember being in my room in my childhood home, one of the coziest, safest places in my life ever, and I was completely freaked out.

That's my favorite of his. The movie is also excellent; Jack Nicholson was a great choice for the main character.

I also loved Christine-- nothing better than an evil, classic car! The special effects in the movie version are fun, though I didn't think that the movie was at all scary.

And yeah... see the mini-series version of It even if you don't read the book. I don't care for the ending, but Tim Curry as Pennywise...

I've read all of his published works and all of the Bachman books. "the girl who loved tom gordan" was the least favorite.. wasn't king-ish enough for my taste.

I am reading Duma Key right now and it's SO FREAKING GOOD that I want to sneak off to the bathroom in my office and read until 5:00.

I LOVE Stephen King. But I hate a few of his books. I can tell by about page 60 if I am going to hate it. I used to push myself thru the ones I hate, now I just know and put it down. I pushed thru The Tommyknockers. I disliked it by page 60 but I kept pushing thru it thinking I would like it. I never did. I never got past page 60 on Needful Things. But then I thought Gerald's Game was delightful when many people I know could not get past about page 30 and the dog (if you read it you know what I mean...).

Oh, and I HATED The Long Walk. OMG, when I got to the end I was pissed. I was like "This is it??!! I stayed up late and it ends like THAT??"

Amazingly I have not ready any of the Dark Tower. I missed the first few when they came out and then I felt like I was behind the curve. I felt like I need to read them in order, but I may be wrong about that.

I also read his non-fiction On Writing: A Memoir of the Craft. In it he talks a lot about his accident and the difficulty he had writing again after that. Duma Key was partly inspired by his struggle.

One note about movies that were made about his books. The ones in the late 70's and early 80's he was not involved in the writing of the script or the production. He sold the movies rights to a couple of his books after Carrie became a big movie hit. So a lot of them, like Salom's Lot, are crap. And he HATED the original movie The Shining. So he vowed to be involved in every movie after that and not to ever sell the rights again. And in many of his movies he has a cameo.

I've only read Carrie and that was in highschool, after reading this thread I bought The Stand to see what I have been missing...it's losing me..*SPOILER ALERT* I'm at the part where the survivors are having dreams and I gotta tell you, the now that it looks like it's between good and evil, it's getting pretty predictable

HATED The Dome...thought the ending was a big cop out...felt he lost the story line and just came up with something off the top of his head.

Am reading 11/22/63..and enjoying it. I am a Dark Towers fan though, those are the best. Although SK drove me nuts waiting...waiting...waiting...for the next installment.

My fav author is Dean Koontz, but he has had a few stinkers also.

Just finished reading Odd Apocalypse. The Odd Thomas series is great.

I will read anything he writes. I may not like everything, but I'll read it.

I liked The Dome. I get what you mean about the ending, though, Misty. I thought he definitely could have done more there.

I am just startingv The Long Road by BAchman. So far gooooooooood. Just finished 11/23/63 GREAT BOOK. I read it in 3 days.

That is why I love his short stories so much! I can read 1 from start to finish in a single sitting and then mull over it. I am pretty good at only ready 1 story at a time.

I am a huge SK fan! The Dark Tower series will forever be the best thing I have read. I even got a tattoo based on it.

I have a lot of trouble reading SK as an adult, since I have less reading time and a shorter attention span I don't have as much patience to sit through his extreme wordiness.

However I LOVED It, the Stand, Pet Sematary and the Talisman. Also liked the Dead Zone, the Mist... some of the short stories like the one where the kid opens his eyes going through the tube thing? I couldn't get through the Dark Tower series... every time I would wait for a new one to come out I'd forget everything that happened before and lose interest. So many words, so few things happened that I couldn't justify trying to re-read to remember what the story was about.

I've told my son that Stephen King made an entire generation of kids scared of balloons. Our family was at a lake once and it was overcast right before a rainstorm hit, and a bright red balloon on a string blew across the beach - completely out of place - and DH and I both SHUDDERED! Seriously the eeriest thing ever, and DS who was 15 at the time thought we were crazy. We blamed Stephen King.

I've read all the SK's, with the exception of the Dark Tower series. My favorites were It, Needful Things, Desperation, and The Regulators. Lisey's Story was also a pretty good new one.

The first SK book i read was "The Long Walk"....by far my favorite read so far. Its an oldie, but seriously a goodie, and i while in collage I wrote a very horrible screen play on it for a class i was taking.

His Richard Bachman writings are really good.

I have ready every book, most of his articles, and many of his ebooks and book on tapes.

Ironically - can not STAND scary movies - no way.

Four Seasons (which is really 4 short stories) had two good stories (which were movies: The Shawshank Redemption and is Stand By Me) and two not so good stories.

I just wanted to say that this one is actually called _Different Seasons_ and that three of the stories were made into movies. I liked all four stories, but "The Breathing Method is a bit different and probably wouldn't be to everyone's taste.

That being said, I am a HUGE Stephen King fan and I love most of his books (though I'll definitely agree with you about _The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon_). I'd say his best works are his short story collections. They are often overlooked in favor of his epic novels but they are really his best work. Sure, every short story collection contains a few duds, but his contain some real jewels that make it so worth it.
