Hi, daughter asked me to post this as she has a sick little and can't get on the computer right now...Her hubby is scheduled to have a vasectomy Friday. How bad is it? How long really out of commission? -And any tips of things she can do to alleviate his pain? Any remorse about doing it?-her hubby seems fine with it.

Thanks!

So let's roll the dice, one more time

Lady here, but my H had one. Compared to childbirth it was a piece of cake!

Get a tight fitting jock strap. Yes he will need to keep the boys close to home for a few days. Frozen peas work well as ice packs.

He will be FINE.

Rest and frozen peas as an ice pack. Stay down for a couple of days. Make sure the kids don't jump on his lap.

Everything should be fine.

OK, I'll take a stab at this one(no pun intended).

I had one 3 years ago. The procedure was simple and I was out of there in about an hour. I was awake for the whole thing. If I could do it over I'd see about having some kind of sedative for the procedure. I was pretty anxious during to say the least.

Painwise after it wasn't too bad. Lots of cold (ice, frozen peas, etc) to reduce swelling. I had pain meds but didn't use them. I took ibuprofen and relaxed for 2-3 days afterwards. Wasn't bad really, just uncomfortable. Gave me an excuse to sit around and catch up on old movies :)

The most embarassing part for me was taking in a "sample" for the dr. to check sperm counts. I won't go into details about that but it is something he'll have to do.

Any remorse about doing it?-her hubby seems fine with it.

So this area really needs to be absolutely 100% positive from both the husband and wife. My wife and I talked and talked about it and finally agreed it was what WE wanted to do. I had the procedure and that was that. Come to find out a year later my wife resented me for it and says that I robbed her of more children. All this after WE talked about it at length and agreed. I was not going to do it unless my wife said it was ok with her. She wasn't completely honest with me and it caused a lot of resentment on her part. The procedure can be reversed(I did not get it reversed) but save yourself the trouble and be sure the first time. If either of them have misgivings then don't do it.

All and all it was worth it to me. I have some lingering physical symptoms but they are minor. PM me if you want to know more, I'm not going to put that info out here :)

It's been almost 15 years, but it wasn't a big deal when I had it. Still remember the docs name - Dr. Butcher . I had my procedure overseas, and there they just knock you out, you wake up, and jog home. I don't remember being too sore, and concur that a frozen bag of peas is nice to have. Just tell her to tip the doc generously to let out a big "Achooo" as he starts .

Womenz here too, but the hubby has experience with this soooo....

How bad is it? How long really out of commission?

Do3K had it on a Friday, rested all weekend with frozen peas and was fine.

-And any tips of things she can do to alleviate his pain?

Pretty much what Rye said for pain management. Peas, Ibuprofen, rest.

Any remorse about doing it?

Do3K had his done in 2006 and didn't have any regrets, at the time. However, he now regrets having it done because he would like to have more kids

Speaking on behalf of my husband as he doesn't do computers...

It was quick, relatively painless and very easy. He had his on a Thursday, and was racing his dirtbike in a motocross on Sunday (he wanted me to point out that he took first in his class that race, too).

He actually watched the procedure ( ). He only took ibuprofen for the pain, not any of the perscriptions they gave him. Don't know why peas is the veggie of choice, but he went through a bag or two while resting for two days. No lasting side effects short of a teeny tiny little scar.

I had the honor of taking in the specimen for him - he had to give one a few weeks after surgery, then at either six or eight weeks after (can't remember). I was on maternity leave, so I got to take it in a brown paper bag to the hospital while he worked (I vaguely remember being able to refrigerate it over night? I know it didn't have to be "fresh")

Never have either of us regretted the decision. We knew that two kids was the perfect family size for us!

I did it. It was very easy. I was in and out in an hour. I was up walking around the market after I left the Dr.s office. I did not really need to take it easy but I did for a few days. Frozen peas were my friend. I had a pain killer prescript but never filled it. The Dr. prescribed as much intercourse as possible to make sure the gun was clean and shooting blanks.

Their size and shape allow for best contact, as they conform around the affected regions.

XH had his done summer 2007

How bad is it?

-Couldn't have been too bad, we went on a motorcycle (sport bike) ride the next day.

How long really out of commission?

-He had it done on a Friday. Went back to work (construction) on Monday.

And any tips of things she can do to alleviate his pain?

-Same as the others, if needed. I didn't do anything with it.

Any remorse about doing it?

-None. Now he doesn't have to worry about anyone getting pregnant.

Failure is success if we learn from it.

Just be really, really, sure - the operation is very straightforward, but reversal is $10,000 + microsurgery without guarantee of good results!

I didn't feel a thing .

Seriously though, H said the same as the others here. Just a few days of soreness, if that. He almost fainted from nerves right before the procedure but he's a big baby.

Best decision ever, in his words.

DS, you are forever in my heart. Thank you for sharing your beautiful spirit with me. I will always try to live by the example you have set. I love you and miss you every day and am sorry you had to go so soon, it just doesn't seem fair.

Something to point out that I haven't seen mentioned - my H had the "scalpleless" version of the proceedure, the enlarge a pore and go in that way, I guess?

His "boys" were swollen to ridiculous proportions. Not much pain, but the amount of swelling did freak him out a bit. And the jock strap is a MUST HAVE.

Yes to this ^^^^. It will help decrease the chance of swelling and provides support.
