Still struggling to find a place that will take my big dog. What's the best way to find privately owned properties? I've got a realtor and even she thinks that I have slim chances.

Do a search for property on the usual real estate sites but put in "Rent" instead.
That's how I found my condo that I rented in 2009.
Or you can search for property management places in the area that you're moving too.

jrc I'm doing that but it just pulls up rental companies and such managed by big companies. I'm thinking I need to find a place that is owner managed.

I was afraid you were going to say that...
Have you considered buying instead?

My house rental was was through a rental site, was property-managed and allowed any size dog--it was , however, in what was considered 'the hood'. I felt reasonably safe there--the police station was less than a mile away and it was mostly families, but I suspect that's why they allowed any size dog.

Since you're moving to a metropolitan area, it will be much easier to find a privately owned rental...like jrc said, many places will list on realtor sites. We live in Middle O' Nowhere, IN and we don't have anything like that so we have to check the paper and drive around town to look for them

I drove around as well. Up and down the streets, we were in a motel at this point. The guy was leary of my cat so I offered him $50.00 more a month and he took me. I guess money talks.
Good luck, I know it's frustrating.

Hurt... are you moving to Miami proper or one of the outlying areas?
Can you live in Broward Co. and commute to wherever you're working?
When I lived down there I lived in Pembroke Pines and commuted north to Plantation to work and my then H commuted south to Homestead for work.
This was in 1993-1995... So in 20 years I'm sure the area has changed beyond recognition for me... but at the time Pembroke Pines was nice and not too expensive.

I am moving to Miami proper. A commute from Broward would easily be 1-2 hours each way. My job is in Coconut Grove.
ETA: I've offered double deposit and pet rent.

Have you tried rent.com?
Also, a friend recommended contacting real estate agents; they may have listings that have been sitting for some time and the sellers may be interested in renting.

I've got a realtor. I've tried trulia, zillow, rent.com, apartment.cm, CL etc. even places that say "yes" to dogs have a weight limit usually 30lbs. Highest I've seen is 50

Newspaper listings and word of mouth is how it's done where I live. Know anybody at colleges or hospitals in your area? Seems like there's always someone looking for renters. Maybe consider a "housing wanted" ad on Craigslist and in the paper?

Why don't you try calling some veterinarians
in the area. They may know where their "clients" live which, obviously, is pet friendly. Or maybe they have a bulletin board and could post a request for you.
