I was making a PB & J and I buttered my bread - jelly side.

Do you butter your bread when you make a sandwich???

All sandwiches or just some?

Never on a regular sandwich.

The only time I butter bread is when I'm making garlic bread, toast, or grilled cheese.

I vaguely remember buttering the bread when making sandwiches as a kid, but now it's only when I make grilled cheese. I know my mom never put mayo on sandwiches. I guess she used butter so the bread wouldn't dry out, and I learned to do it from her.

My mom never did this, but my step-dad did... he buttered every sandwich he made...

That's how I came to butter my PB & J... I don't do it on bologna or salami or anything else...

FWSO was curious, because he's seen it done, but never knew why.

I never liked sandwiches when I was growing up. I had to take them to school, but I never ate them (shhh-don't tell mom... ) If I recall, though, I think my father always buttered his sandwiches. I don't think mom did. However she used to send us to school with such disgusting things like sardine sandwiches and cream cheese & olives Butter would have been the coup de grace

Parkay(or Nucoa at Grandma's) on both pieces of the white bread helps keep the mustard and sweet pickle relish from soaking through and keeps the 'Merican cheese from sliding. Just add baloney(rich kids had bologna), salamie or processed ham product and life is complete.

Careful!

That's a patented technique. Seriously.

They figured out how to put PB&J sandwiches in vending machines. The problem was the jelly bleeding through the bread.

They butter the bread, and it stops it.

That's what I heard, anyway.

Take care of yourself. There's a great future out there. It won't come to you; you have to go to it.

But but but - all you have to do is put a thin layer of PB on BOTH pieces of bread, and then the jelly goes in the middle.

Why sully the perfection of a PB&J with another B???

What's wrong with Parkay Empress?

...all you have to do is put a thin layer of PB on BOTH pieces of bread...

With all due respect my Lady, your logic is flawed since a proper PBB&J absolutely requires at least a half of a jar of PB, B and J per sandwich.

Heresy. Next thing you know, you'll be saying you use crunchy PB.

I have no words to describe the pity I feel for your never having experienced a *proper* PB&J.

Oh, I have to jump in now, NIK! Proper PB&J include EXTRA crunchy PB. Anything less is...well...saddening.

I agree with Heart. Extra crunchy PB is the way to go.

I put butter on sandwiched that get butter such as frilled cheese or fried eggsandwiches or something like that. I never thought of buttering a sandwich to spread something else over the butter (although I will add jelly to my already buttered toast that I get from a restaurant).

Peanut butter, jelly, butter and bacon....

Hmmm.. That might be worth trying. Bacon does make everything taste better.

I do not, but know a lot of people who butter the jelly side to keep it from seeping thru.
