Depends if it is an employment at will state, which, I just looked and NY is. Basically that means they can terminate employees at will without grounds for cause. (My HR is old and rusty....)

What I can't remember is if you can file unemployment after only a week...I"m sure it varies by state, so at least worth checking it out.

Oh no. That's awful, Sad. I'm so sorry.

I suspect they had someone else they wanted more on the hook for the job who just came through this week, but then, I'm paranoid.

Sounds plausible to me. Or, since they seem clueless, maybe they liked the idea of an office manager, then decided they didn't like having to pay for one.

I'm with gma. I hope you get a much better job with a rival company! Or an even better one in some fascinating field. I'm glad you're still happy about relocation. And on a positive note - it should be easier to find another job there now that you're on the spot.

I really, really hope you won't have to job-hunt for very long.

Edited to clarify:

My "Sounds plausible" referred to the firing theory, NOT to the paranoia one.

Wow, that sucks!

Some people are just horrible people. I'm really sorry for you that you've lost your employment so suddenly, especially after uprooting yourself to move there, but I'm certain you dodged a much bigger bullet not having to work for them any longer. People like that can do so much harm to you -- you are better off not having their toxic assholeyness fumes to breathe.

Thank you all for the support; it means a lot to me.

I've got a plan of action--several phone calls to make; I've reinstated my job hunting email alerts; and I've joined a couple of meetups so I can get out of the apartment and meet people.

I've also got several books rolling around in my head that I've wanted to try to write. I'm not sure how to fit it in with job hunting, as that tends to consume me, but maybe this is the right time. We'll see.

I have no expertise in unemployment benefits, but is it possible that you could qualify for benefits either from New York, or possibly Texas, because you only moved knowing you had this job, which you have now been terminated from?

It seems worth checking into just so you know for sure.

Though I'm sure you will find something soon!

Oh, Sad, bugger all! "Asshats" is too good a word for these sorry excuses for humans. I don't know NY or US labour law, but around here (Ontario, Canada), this is the law:

Eating Periods

An employee must not work for more than five hours in a row without getting a 30-minute eating period (meal break) free from work. However, if the employer and employee agree, the eating period can be split into two eating periods within every five consecutive hours. Together these must total at least 30 minutes. This agreement can be oral or in writing.

They may be breaking labour law by not allowing a break from your desk.

Hey Sad

Same thing happened to me a few years back. I started working for a marketing company in sales, and had no sales experience. He said he would teach me, he never did. He also asked me to contact all my old clients and I had already told him before I was hired I wasn't going to go after the business of my former employer. Those people were off limits. He forgot we had that conversation and was VERY upset when I told him no.

We did a lot of presentations and he came to me once and asked me to do a presentation for a mosquito killing/ridding company. He wanted some quotes on hats, t shirts, fly swatters, etc .. and I did that for him. Everything he asked for I did for him. He came back and said I didn't think out of the box and didn't go above and beyond. I only gave him what he asked for. SIGH

so the next time he asked me to do a presentation I included all the things he asked and then added like 4 additional items. He came back and asked me why I could not FOLLOW DIRECTIONS.

Eventually I was fired. It was a relief. It was a witch hunt from the beginning. I ended up at a temp company making a lot less, but I kept the roof over my head and it was WORTH IT.

I'm sorry this happened BUT it sounds like you would have stayed (like me)and it sounded miserable!!!

P.S. the next job I got, I came in like a beaten dog. I hung my head, stayed quiet and waited to get fired. He destroyed my confidence. Well, I have become a rock star here. Promotions, confidence back. It will be ok!

Great to get away from those 'entrepreneurs'; lousy to be out of a job.

I don't know if a week is enough to qualify for unemployment, but they may owe you notice, which might be added to the week and qualify you.
