Our 5 year old cat died suddenly this morning!

His name was Teddy and he was 5 years old. Maine-coon cat, just sturdy and such a lover.

He was born in our house 5 years ago and my girl who is now 10 is the cat whisperer and her and him had such an incredible cat/girl relationship.

Last night he laid with me and my 3 year old for an hour and just purred, then left to go be with my 10 year old.

At 5 this morning, he came into my room. He let out a weird sound and my H got up and he did it again. He was acting like he was trying to cough something up. My 10 year old heard it and came into our room and says "I'll take him downstairs, he probably needs to cough up a hair ball"

Like 2 min later, I hear a horrific scream come from downstairs. My H and I run to the stairs, where I precede to fall down the entire flight. My ten year old is sobbing "Teddy is dead".. All I could do is hold her and cry. My H went and in a panic tried to give him kitty CPR, but he was already gone.

I feel intense guilt that my 10 year old was alone with him as this happened. I know we couldn't have known, but it doesn't help. Her account of what happened after she took him down sounds like he got very panicked right before he died and then he just died.

We all loved this cat. He was my first cat I had from birth, and is the first pet I have ever lost. I feel absolutely heartbroken for my 10 year old (who is surprisingly doing fairly well right now).

RIP "Teddy Grahams"

Maine-coon cat, just sturdy and such a lover.

I have found that they are the most affectionate cats ever.

I am so very sorry for your loss. I can't imagine what happened to your dear Teddy. Not only are you dealing with a sudden death, there seems to be no real reason.

Is it possible he ate something poinsonous? Does he go outside?

hugs to you your whole family, Myheartstillhurt

Sister,

He had never been outside, and I have done a bunch of research this morning based on the events that happened.

It is most likely that his heart gave out. Feline hypertrophic cardiomyopathy is super prevalent in these cats and many die early from this. I feel pretty confident this is what happened.

Doesn't make it easier though. Feel awful for my daughter. Wish I could bring her best friend back.

No, I am sure it doesn't make it better. Just understand what happened a little better. I didn't know that about Maine coon cats.

Feel awful for my daughter. Wish I could bring her best friend back.

I am so sorry to hear about Teddy. I know the devastation of the sudden loss.

I lost a 4 yr.old Maine Coon from hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. I was able to get her to the vets before she passed and he confirmed the diagnosis. We have had Maine Coons for yrs. and I had never known about the heart condition until we lost our Chelsea.

Many Maine Coon breeders are now checking for this before they will sell the kittens.

Hugs to you and your family.

So sorry to hear of your loss. It hurts so much, when it happens suddenly. Please help your daughter understand that it was really a blessing for Teddy, he never got old, never had lots of pain, and wasn't sick for a long time.

I'm so so sorry.

My DD found our cat last summer, when he died suddenly from FIV, he was not very old, he found us as a stray. Luckily she was with her boyfriend who stayed with her till I got home. It's going to take a while for everyone to get over the loss, it was acute and in my DD's head for a while. She fondly remembers him now without the pain. After all, he was a member of the family.

Hugs to you all.
