There are companies that specialize in snake removal

You can get Snake Away at Home Depot or Lowe's. You don't have to wait for it to arrive. It wouldn't hurt to have some extra around, though I have a feeling you'll end-up using it all.

You may find by getting rid of all his hiding places he will move on on his own too. They are very cautious and leary, and don't like to not have an escape route.

It's just a little wooded area we're close to. We don't live out in the woods by any stretch...lol!!

MH was looking at more images of snakes to see if he could determine what it really is. We believe we have two snakes...Mr. Slithers and a cottonmouth.

He's positive the one last night is a cottonmouth. He said it had the exact same markings

If it really is a cottonmouth...then he will kill it But he will spare Mr. Slithers for all you snake charmers out there

Kill the cottonmouth. They are just mean.

I am terrified of snakes and yet this thread actually has me rooting for Mr. Slithers. WTF?

The only snakes we have are rattlesnakes and nobody can say they are nice! Blech. When my dd was about 11 she almost stepped on a baby when we were on a hike. You have NEVERE seen a child run so fast!!!

I've cleared off the area of the patio that they have been slithering up to at night. If the cottonmouth comes back, MH is ready to shoot it.

We could make stickers, and post pictures of him with funny sayings just like Grumpy Cat. And make stuffed toy Mr. Slithers. And name tags with Mr. Slithers going around the border....

If you have a cottonmouth, it will have an arrowhead shaped head. They have a pretty dangerous bite, so I would call 911 and have them send a snake fetching officer out to remove him. I suspect that what you have is a rat snake, though. They can get really big- up to 8' long. If it's a venomous snake, it should have a triangular head and they eye will be a slit- like a cat eye. A non-venomous snake has a head that's the same as the body and they have a round eye. Most snake bites occur when someone is trying to kill a snake, so I'd really encourage MH to call 911 if he really thinks it's a dangerous one. A snake fetching officer would probably love to have a rat snake, so you can still see if they'll come out and get it. I'm in NC and we have those officers here, so I'm SURE you have them in TX.

ETA: I called 911 on a salamander the day after we had a rat snake in the house. I thought it was a snake and it was under the fireplace- no way were we opening that thing without knowing what was on the other side! So, they came out here and laughed at me, but they weren't mad.

Oh, and when the actual snake got in, it was behind the couch and the cats were messing with it...

I didn't know it was a snake because cats hiss, you know, so I thought it was some sort of spider. So, I took the spray and sprayed behind the couch without moving it. I'm SO glad I didn't move it because I was alone and would surely have had a heart attack upon seeing that in my living room. It was a baby, but it was still a snake! So, anyway, spraying them just pisses them off!

The problem here is that you have to get CLOSE enough to see that triangular head, KWIM???

I doubt you have one in your yard, unless you have a swamp on the otherside of your fence. They are mean and nasty, and poisonous, however they are extremely shy, live in swampy areas, where water is very still, and undisturbed, so most frequently seen in the backs of coves in lakes, where there is a lot of undergrowth, and trees, shade etc.

I beleive someone posted a cottonmouth earlier in this thread. Look at his head shape, that's the tell. You don't have to get close to tell if it's triangular/arrowhead shaped to see the difference. I don't think your little fountain would be a big enough draw for one.

Mr. Slithers on the other hand, he's just trying to limit your frog, rat, mouse population.

We're pretty familiar with Southeast Texas snakes...we'll the poisonous ones for the most part.

Tushnurse...we have a bayou that runs behind our property. In the 21 years we've lived here we have seen two cottonmouths in our backyard...one was slithering right by the fence line where I was watering my flowers...ACK!!!! It's certainly not common for us to see them, but it's not completely unheard of either.

I really, really, really don't like cottonmouths! All the ones I've ever seen have had their mouths wide open, ready to bite someone.
