We adopted a 10 year old Dachshund earlier this year. He's a sweetie for the most part and is in pretty good health.

The problem is he has a strong unpleasant odor. DS gives him a weekly bath and he'll smell good for several hours but then that odor comes back, usually by the next day.

Does anyone know of something we could bathe him in or do to stop the odor? DS has tried a variety of dog and even human shampoos, but the nice scent is very temporary.

I know a lot of elderly dogs will just have a smell about them which I guess is related to their aging, and that may be the problem. But, any suggestions?

Does he drag his butt on the ground? Could be impacted anal glands.

It is not normal for a dog to have an odor that does not go away.

Is the odor coming from the mouth? This could be a sign of kidney problems or dental/gum disease.

Is the odor coming from the head? Check for an ear infection.

An odor on the body could be a skin infection.

Is the odor coming from the backside? Could be impacted anal glands or anal gland abscess.

I would suggest taking the dog to the vet to have him checked.

The odor is all over his body, his head, back, it all smells. He's a house dog. I haven't noticed him dragging his butt along the ground. H just returned to work full-time yesterday and right now we don't have money for a vet visit. But maybe in a couple of paychecks I can bring him in.

Did he always have this odor or did he develop it after you got him? Have you always fed him the same food? A dog's diet can cause them to have body odor. Perhaps, if you have been feeding him the same food, you might change it and see if it has any affect on him.

My first thought being a mom of floppy eared dogs for many years is yeast in the ears. In dogs it is very common, and they will have dark brown to black gunk in their ears. IT will make them stink and it is easy to treat and get rid of.

Second thought is mouth, an older small dog - they tend to get yucky teeth and it will make the entire dog stink. This is a bit more involved as far as treatment goes, they sedate them and really get in there and clean all the yuck away.

Lastly is a fungal skin infection, does he have any areas that his fur is thing or missing? His elbows, his hips, or his tummy? If so get some good old monistat, and rub the areas 2 times a day, and it should go away in a week or two.

If it's not any of that stuff he needs to go to the vet, as it could be a serious health issue.

My Golden had K-9 Lupus, and he had a funk about him that would not go away, he also lost most of his fur on his muzzle and rear end. It came back eventually, but he never completely lost the odor.

My dog had a horrible smell even after bathing him. He then developed skin issues. It turned out to be a thyroid problem easily fixed with medication. No more odor.

He's had the smell since we got him. We do give him bites of people food every day, he's a beggar, LOL, I will try some new dog food and see if that's helpful. He lost three teeth in the last six months, they just fell out. Found one of them in his food bowl two weeks ago.

His ears look clean inside. He did have something on his skin last month but it has finally healed, looked like a rash of some kind. I will try the Monistat if it returns.

He lost three teeth in the last six months, they just fell out

My bff's dog had a horrible odor problem and it was her teeth. She'd smell fine after a bath, but the next day she'd be stinking again. She ended up having to have her teeth pulled and now she is odor free.

Oh he needs his teeth cleaned for sure. At age 10 they shouldn't be falling out.

Schedule it with the vet. You will be thrilled by how much better he smells, and yes I think a pic or two will help us decide, as I love Dachsies!!!!

I have had to rescues with the same issue both times it was prissy gums.
