Guy Selling Meat at My Door

Wow! A man came to my door. He is selling meat door to door. It is very cold out. 12 degrees. He asked if I was interested, they are selling steaks for less than $4.00 a steak. Filet mignon. Yum. I said maybe.

He goes to his vehicle to get the box of meat. He comes back. He asks if he can come in my house, I said no, I don't know you. He said, "I don't know you either and it is cold out here, but whatever." He starts showing me the meat. I have to buy the whole package and I ask where the meat is from. He doesn't have a uniform on or ID. I didn't ask for ID either, stupidly. But the meat looked legit. He said he was US Beef Company. Or, something like that.

I asked "How much for the package?" he said $1000.00 dollars but was joking. So then he says "Since you haven't ordered from us before" and starts showing me an official looking pamphlet, but he is doing this through my closed glass storm door that I have open just a crack so I can hear him. He wants to open the door more so he can put his arm in or something with the pamphlet and then he says "What the fuck", because he is frustrated, I guess, and cold. No gloves and just a hoody. I closed the door in his face.

Now, why do I feel bad? Here is a guy trying to make a living. It is cold outside. Not comfortable with having a door to door salesman in my house. I don't even like having repairmen that I called in my house when I am alone. I believe I did the right thing, but now I feel like a bad person. *sigh*

The only meat/seafood that I know of that goes door to door (in my area) is Schwanns (or something like that).

A guy in a hoody with no ID or uniform? Was he even driving a "company" vehicle that was marked with a company name? The whole thing smells of stolen goods to me.

Thank goodness you didn't let him in your house.

His entire attitude was sketchy. If you DID buy some, please don't eat it. Who knows how it has been stored or where its been before it ended up in his trunk.

They have their own trucks clearly decaled with their logo on them. I see them around town all the time. So if this guy didn't have the truck, I'd be suspect.

They caught my X, the salesman, at home alone and we ended up with hundreds of dollars worth of what I consider pretty sub standard quality meat. In fact, we ended up tossing most of it away.

As to his attitude, anyone using that kind of language wouldn't even get a second chance with me.

Yeah you can't miss those yellow monster Schwann trucks. There's another company that has a white vans with ribs or a ham on the side of the van as well. I don't like door to door salesman. As soon as I say no thank you or not interested, you should walk away don't try to convince me otherwise. Half the time I don't even open the door. Nothing against them personally but don't come bothering me at my home. I personally think you should call and report his ass to the police. If he's still in the area going door to door they will find him. If he's legit then he'll have paperwork to show them if not then they at least know who he is.

Yeah, I really don't like door to door salesman.

This happened at my house once, years ago. We had just gotten my summer check for teaching (I opted to have my salary paid out evenly over 12 months). My then H bought a whole package. Over $500. The meat was in boxes and individually sealed in vacuum packs. I hated it. It didn't taste anywhere near as good as what I normally buy. I was so thankful when the last of it was finally gone.

There is a company here that has trucks that have a freezer in the bed and they are painted like cows. (Clever huh) They came to my door one time, and the dude was less than professional, and since I had two kids that were yelling at each other, and great dane that didn't like him he didn't hang around long.....And he never came back.

DO NOT FEEL BAD. I WOULD NEVER ALLOW A SALSEMEN IN MY HOME. I don't care who is there and isn't, he doesn't need to be in my house.

I did have to get rude with a book salesmen one time. He caught me on the porch with a glass of wine, on a warm afternoon, and thought he could rook me.

I finally said "Listen your a nice kid an all, but I discourage my kids from reading, gives em ideas ya know."

Yah he left.

ALWAYS be cautious!

Recently in my neck of the woods, a man with a uniform similar to the postal uniforms knocked on a door, the woman opened the door thinking it was a delivery, all of a sudden three more guys run up her driveway and storm into the house.

This woman was home with four small children, she was knocked on the head with a gun?. Her children were terrorized. Fortunately, no family member sustained injuries, but the emotional toll is yet to be seen.

Unless I SEE a truck parked in the front of my home, I do not answer the door....ever.

I bought some steaks from one of those guys once. They were terrible. They had no marbling but a ton of gristle, they were rubbery and just thoroughly unappealing. You're not a bad person for not having a refrigerator full of sub-par meat.

Since I live in the semi-boonies, guys like this come around fairly frequently. I keep the glass storm door locked and if I see them coming up the front walk I just stand in the doorway and provide my answer through the door. Saves the hassle. I've had guys come around asking if I need any work that needs "doin" (No; I have a regular handyman); the unmarked meat scam (Why on earth would I buy unknown meat from a stranger?); and best of all, the driveway scam (Why would I let you put an unknown substance you have leftover from other paving jobs on top of my driveway?). As an older woman living alone, there is NO way I'm opening my door to somone I don't know or who is not scheduled to come to my house in advance from a trusted company - flat out.

Be careful what you wish for the most - you may get it.

At times like this it was very helpful to have a mastiff. No one ever wanted to come inside my house.

Seriously I would never buy meat or seafood from an unknown vendor. I was even leery of fruits & vegetables, and people were always these on the side of the road in AZ.

It's illegal to transport if not in a refrigerated truck (I don't care how cold it is out) and in most places all such commercial trucks must have sign ID on the door.

I have these guys come around to my house a couple of times a year.

It is usually a GREAT deal & any meat we have ever bought has been good.

They hire "kids" who can drive around & go door-to-door selling but do not have regular routes, etc. (I have asked them to return on a more regular basis & this was what the owner told me one time.)

JMO...but I did want to say that someone out here has had it happen & I look forward to when they come back, as you can get some great package deals from them!!!
