How to get tree sap off clothes

number4 posted 11/6/2020 15:39 PM

On Tuesday I sat outside in a wooded area on our church grounds to meditate. When I got up, yep, parts of me stuck to the wooden slat bench because it had tree sap on it. Without thinking, I picked up my purse, and slung it over my shoulder, but my purse had sap on it, and it rubbed off on my shirt. These were workout clothes, but nice workout clothes. We tried step #1... just washing them regularly, but that did nothing.

What's the next thing we should try? Goof Off? Alcohol? Turpentine?

The fabric is mostly polyester, with a little bit of spandex for both the top and bottom.

From my hiking/camping back-in-the-days - rubbing alcohol worked wonders. But usually - that was on slick things like tents and tarps. I'm not sure about stretchy and nice workout clothes with the dye. Could you do a little test with some hand sanitizer (ha! - there's those words again) on a white rag to try?

I've had amazing luck through the years with Dawn dish soap breaking down all sorts of stuff - so it might be worth a try to soak it in a bucket just to see if that might jump-start the loosening?

I'd suggest first freezing the garment to solidify the sap as much as possible. Then, try to chip away the excess sap, like you would with chewing gum. Once you've gotten as much as you can off, I'd try spot-cleaning with Dawn and as hot water as you can. Good luck!

Try olive oil. Often sticky substances come off better with oils vs alcohol or astringent. Try extremely hot water, soap is mostly sugar so....Or if that doesn't work mineral oil.
