I work for the Department of Defense, so, government employee. I haven't had even a cost of living raise since before this administration,- the only thing that has been raised are my taxes....
I didn't get my bonus, due to no funds, and got 6 non paid Fridays due to the furlough. Holding on with my toenails at this point, as I have no significant other for help, no family left. Groceries have become sort of a luxury. Sooooo, Kroger has a friday freebie special. Download a coupon and get a free 2 liter of Dr Pepper ten. I spent half an hour trying to download the coupon yesterday, ("sorry, this site is down due to heavy traffic") only to finally be told "downloaded"! Score! Success! Didn't get to Kroger last night, but checked my coupon and it said it was good until 7 September. Success again!! Went to Kroger today to get eggs to make deviled eggs for a bbq tomorrow, and got me my free Dr Pepper!! NOT. Coupon didn't work. Paid 1.50 for a two liter I shouldn't be drinking anyway. Fucking fuckity fuck. Is this what I am reduced to? Depending on free 1.50 soft drinks? Spending half an hour on getting one? Kroger, my many, sincere, heartfelt thank yous for helping me realize how much suck there is in my life now. Fuck you and the universe that has my face on the pinata I have become. First world problems, I know, but FML. Seriously. Hopefully, this will become a PSA and someone out there will buy a poor government employee a Dr. Pepper...lol

Thanks guys, it's funny now, but it sure wasn't when I couldn't get the damn thing open. This is one of the many reasons I shouldn't drink soda, right? (In case the good Dr PJ is reading...lol) And the eggs were pretty yummy after all.

This and getting charged twice for things is why I check my receipt before leaving the parking lot. It sucks having to drive back to the store.
My Xh and half my family work for the dept of defense or the state. Most of my family work in a hazzard area. People don't get that they get paid more because of it. I've had family and friends who developed serious, deadly health problems because of their job.
My XSIL once told her daughter that we were rich. WTF ever lol!
I set that straight real quick.
Hopefully once Obama is out of office you will get a raise.

This is why i have been reduced to getting free veggies from the farm garden and price matching/couponing at Walmart.
I feed the family of 4 plus 2 dogs for about 90 a week, We can only go every other week, and we ONLY go between times for dog food and diapers, anything else we just live without.
The worst was when we ran out of milks, bread, and eggs....never in a million years would i think that we made so much stuff with those 2 ingredients
I have learned to make meals based on sales rather then what i want to make. We eat alot more potato stuff when i can get a 10 lb bag for 1.99 :)

Times are tough. Today I made $90.00 bucks cleaning and have to pay for 3 dinners and a pair of school sneakers for my son. I could not do it with out coupons. We all struggle. Vent away. I would be pissed too.
You should have received your discount freebie. Did they send you to the service desk? Cashiers worth anything know the Friday stuff and should know the work arounds- not stare at you...
Even though it is only a buck fifty sometimes it is worth the confrontation in order to get results.
If you faced the problem then other people did too and in my experience it is worth getting to know who the people who work at the store who know their shit and are willing to help. As opposed to the idiots who are marking time, who just want you to go away.
I would take the time to email the store manager with the name of the clerk if you remember it.
She/he should have asked for customer service rep or sent you there to SOLVE your problem. Not acted like it was unsolvable....
One time I was fed up trying to stock up on a 'loss leader' item I needed for a scout event and complained to the manager-- I received and apology and a $50.00 gift card.
I know who to ask for help at my store and boy does that make things easier.
I am sorry you had a rough day. Sometimes you have to fight for your right for the free DR pepper.
Put on your friendly, but serious bitch boots and got get that 2L.

Isn't it sad that so many of us can understand the groceries as luxury aspect? If we are scraping by, we aren't saving for retirement or doing some of the soul gratifying things like traveling to the beach, in my case. I work this hard to subsist? Yes, yes! that's totally what I had hoped to become when I grew up....
It is a really good idea to get to know people at the store, I should've thought about that sooner. Thanks so much for the tips!

Hey I am a cleaning lady with a college degree!
Not in my life plan.
I take pride in the fact that I can wring a lot worth out of the dollars I do earn. I think you should too!
We should start a tips thread---
Here is a good one. Did you know that from 4-6 pm if you go to the Deli at Kroger's and they do not have an hot and ready Rot. Chickens then you get a coupon for a free one. I am always checking the deli if I am there in that time frame!!! Free Chicken tastes better!

I had a big problem at the grocery store a couple of months ago. Long story short, I was in line for over 25 minutes, only one person ahead of me, they opened a new line and took every person behind me in line. I was so pissed that when I got home I wrote a letter to the corporate office.
I laid out exactly what happened and finished with the line, "Thanks for reminding me why I usually shop at Target and Wegmans."
The very next morning the store manager called me and I ended up getting a $20 gift card as an apology.
So....try writing to the corporate office. They might send you a coupon, gift card, or something else nice. It's worth a shot!

Andddddddd........ here's my first money saver tip- at my Kroger's in the cat food aisle (??) they have a clearance section. I have long nails that I do myself to save money, and fairly often they have the OPI nail polish 50 percent off, for 3.99 a bottle. I can occasionally afford that, and a bottle lasts me for months...and I have a little yorkie, who I feed Chef Michael's dog food for the high protein content, and they have torn bags, missing very little, for half price. And when I buy it there, I get a dollar off coupon, so dogfood for 4.98 instead of 10.98! Win for me and little Buddy! Can't wait to hear your tips....oh, and Undefinabl13- we have a community garden here that sells boxes of veggies that are in season for 5.00 a box- you can can them, or make multi dinners and freeze them- I am in the South, so squash is always plentiful, and I have developed many recipes to use them, including marinating them in Greek dressing and grilling them in thin strips. The joke here is that if you leave your windows down, no one will rob you, but will throw a bag of squash in your window...
