Anybody ever broke their foot?

I think I did.

I play in an indoor volleyball league. During Monday's night's game, I scampered for an errant ball (and got it! ha!) and planted my left foot awkwardly. I immediately felt something weird - can't decided if I should describe it as a pop, twinge, crackle - at the base of my big toe and through the center of my foot. I kept playing and it hurt, but nothing like the pain I felt after getting out of the car after the game. Holy tears!

Now, it's a bit swollen, very slightly discolored and can take my breath away when I put pressure on it. I can walk on the outside of my foot, but not put pressure on my whole foot, and definitely not on the big toe/instep area.

What's my point? I don't know if it is worth getting x-rayed, or just continuing to ice and rest it. I hate to pay for the x-ray for them to tell me a) it's just a strain, or b) yep - it's broke. Ice and rest it.

So I call on the wise advise of SI... is this worth going to the doctor for?

Sigh. I am not as young as I used to be, and these sports things are starting to wear on this aging (40 year old) body!

Get it x-rayed. I broke my foot playing basketball when I got knocked down and someone landed on it. It hurt but not too bad. In the middle of the night the pain grew in intensity. I walked myself into the ER but out on crutches as I did break my 5th metatarsal. Get the x-ray

I'm sort of wondering why you don't just go get it xrayed??

DeadMum... I hate the expense and hassle of going to get it x-rayed if it is nothing. I know - poor excuse.

Just seems that based on my past experience, everything I think is "something" turns out to be nothing. And then I spend a couple hundred dollars that I could have used elsewhere on the visit.

I recognize that I probably should change my thinking on this!

I did something similar earlier in the year. (Dropped/slid/shoved a cabinet on my foot) Close to the same spot of the foot as yours.

Anyway, snap, crackle, pop, Dear Gawd, the pain, bruising, swelling, etc.

Everyone's going to throw a fit, but I didn't go in. What are they gonna do? X-ray it, say, "Yep, it's broke. Here's a boot for 6 weeks", and send me on my way. Time, expense, aggravation.

I elevated, iced, braced, and dealt with it a few weeks. I'm fine now. The fluctuating weather messes with it but that's typical with breaks/sprains/surgeries for a while after the incident.

X-ray if you want.

I get not wanting to waste money on it, but if it is broken, and we are talking about the foot, not a toe, then yes you should get an xray, and recommended treatment. If bones are not aligned properly, and heal wrong, you can be looking at a lifelong issue that can be crippling, and cost thousands and thousands of dollars down the road.

Better safe than sorry.

I took a slip on a loose piece of paper on the floor at my school in 2009. My leg went up and I came down and landed on my left foot. Right foot never left the ground.

I worked for two more hours then went to urgent care.

Yep... broken 4th metatarsal.

Wore a boot for about 8 weeks.

Get it X-Rayed... or not. It will probably heal on it's own eventually.

Be gentle with it.

Well, I went tonight. No break. Just a strain. "The padding that protects those bones in our feet thins when we age leaving us more succeptable to injury" - Dr. quote. So I am getting old, and that is the problem!

Just some icing, elevation and rest, and Tylenol for pain. Time to take it easy!

I'm glad you went. Just because it's not broken doesn't mean it was not the right decision to get it xrayed. It's better to have the professionals tell you 'it's nothing' than for you to guess about it and be wrong.

If you had a child with the same thing wrong with them, I'm sure you'd take them in. Treat yourself just as well!!

The principle I use is that if I'm not sure whether it's ok or not, then that means I should get it seen to.

stroopy-

Late to the post- my foot is broken as I post. Broke it last week. Bad landing. I agree with the Doc- ten years ago this may have been a strain. Today, broken bones, a boot, rest, elevate, ice compress. At this point most of my foot is blue/black.

Take it easy ladies, allow yourselves to be the Queen for a while.

Foot injuries suck. Allow yourselves time to heal.

Glad it's a sprain not a break!!!

I broke mine a couple years ago... just walking across the living room floor (and my bone density test came back fine, so there's never been an explanation).

^^^ This. I actually had my foot x-rayed right away, but the break didn't show up, so I hobbled around -- could only walk using the outside edge of the foot -- for a month before I went back for another x-ray. Then got the boot for 8 weeks. And it still never healed correctly.

I get by now with custom orthotics and I cannot walk barefoot any longer. I just can't. I'll never wear flip-flops again, never walk on a beach barefoot again... So odds are I will be doing that thousands-of-dollars surgery at some point.

I'm done here; sick of 2 x 4s
