My son is 9 1/2, and has really been into the Geronimo Stilton books for the last year or so. Before that, he was really into the Magic Tree House series. That's his creative reading side.
Generally speaking, he likes to read a lot of books of facts, like the Ripley's Believe It Or Not Books, Guinness Book of World Records, and also tons of biographies. I never would have guessed that he would be into biographies, but he's currently reading an adult-level biography about Abraham Lincoln.
What he likes to read is totally different than what I liked to read as a kid.
Do you have a library nearby? If so, let him browse around for awhile and see what interests him. You may be surprised. He may even like Treasure Island.

My son loved:

He also reads:
*Ghost Buddy by: Henry Winkler and Lin Oliver
*The 39 Clues by Rick Riordan
*Infinity Ring by James Dashner
*DragonBreath by Ursula Vernon.
We've found some classics in the dollar spot at Target he has The Legend of Sleepy Hollow and The Time Machine.
That's just to name a few. He also some Choose Your Own Adventures.

depends on his reading level. Does he like horror? if so, anything by Darren Shan - it's pretty disgusting though.
mystery? House of the scorpion - love....
fantasy/steampunk - Leviathan
horror/fantasy - Miss Peregrine's home for peculiar children
dystopian? - the Divergent series.
I recommend LEGEND to anyone.
these may be a little beyond the 10 year old level..depends on where he is and genre he likes...
I have had plenty of kids (boys and girls) LOVE the Face on the Milk Carton series by Cooney.
Anything by Gary Paulsen - and he is prolific - humor, survival, coming of age genre... and his book Winterdance, nonfiction, about running the Iditarod was the funniest book I've read.

Lots of great suggestions. I'd also suggest the Tiffany Aching series by Terry Pratchett starting with Wee Free Men.
Treasure Island is still a great book for a young boy.
Aside from Harry Potter our 10 year old son is obsessed with the Origami Yoda books. Encyclopedia Brown, but it's kind of an easy read and there is NO INTERWEBS IN IT BECAUSE IT IS BEFORE INTERWEBS. He also loves the Captain Underpants books but it's distilled potty humor. My wife says "it is age appropriate but.. yeah.."
He also enjoys nonfiction books that cover subjects that interest him, I think those are great for young readers too.
When I was 10 I liked the Dragonlance series.

at 10 he can be at pretty much any reading level.
I can say that my boy was an avid reader, and the Harry Potter books were some favorites early on (he was reading those in 1st grade) The Percy Jackson series
I would also try to get him to read some classics inbetween others.
He loved 10000 leauges under the sea. Robinson Carusoe, Treasure Island,and lord of the flys, and when he had to reread it in middle school he had a completely different take on it, which was neat.
In addition he loved Holes, Hatchet, both he had to read for school.
Now he's 16 and read the whole series of Mortal instruments books. He also read a few Stephen King books starting with the Stand but I think he was in middle school. Hunger Games books are awesome too if he hasn't read those.

Captain Underpants rocks! We love Captain Underpants, Super Diaper Baby and Ook and Gluk. Dav Pilkey is just great for boys!

Love rick riordan...and middle school aged children love him too! So he can continue to read and enjoy those books for a long time. Jerry spinelli is good for that age too...maniac magee is a great one for 10 year olds. Jack gantos is a great author and gordon korman as well. There is also a lot of great non-fiction out there as well. I did let my 10 year old boy read the hunger games series...which he loved...but maybe not for all 10 year olds??

If he's a fan of Harry Potter he may like the Charlie Bone series by Jenny Nimmo.
If he likes action, adventure, and spy stuff, he may want to give the Alex Rider series by Anthony Horowitz a try.
