Of course it is sex. They would have called it an Oral handshake if it wasn't. I teach this to teens nearly everyday that you can get nearly every STD by having sex orally, anal or any other way you can think about. It is WAY more intimate to me than regular sex too.

If it's *not* sex, then YOU should be freely preforming it with strangers in the street.

I was going to say it is semantics and doesn't matter whether one considers it sex or not. It would be a dealbreaker for me like regular intercourse no matter what one chooses to call it.
But then I saw this reply...
Yes it is sex. Just a different type of sex from intercourse. That is why they call it Oral Sex. To me anything that involves intimate touching is sex.
the word sex in oral sex tells us it is sex!

Sure, everybody knows that oral sex is sex..but apparently my WH thought that getting oral sex in my car and not intercourse would not seem as "bad" to me. This after already admitting to sex of all kinds in every part of the county.

Thanks everyone for confirming my "suspicion" that oral sex was sex.
neverendinghurt ~ I think I understand what you mean, and I agree with you that a lot of people think that sex means strictly intercourse, which I don't agree with. Please tell me if you gave someone oral sex what would you call that? If it wasn't sex, what is it? Inquiring minds want to know.

I would call it making someone's day
Sorry couldn't resist.
Seriously, I would call it giving a blow job. And unless it was recipricol, "I" wouldn't be having anything, certainly not sex. Giving a BJ isn't going to float my boat if you know what I mean.
I do agree that all are sexual acts, but I have always thought of "having sex" as having sexual intercourse.
The difference between having oral sex and having sex (sexual intercourse) to me is the same as the difference between going out for appetisers at the bar and sitting down to a four course dinner in a nice restaraunt.
Again, not trying to minimise blow jobs/cunnilingus - either of those done with someone other than your partner is cheating.
ETA: I don't know if it is a cultural thing or not, but where I am from "having sex" is a common term for intercourse, just as "screwing, shagging, f$%#*&^" are. None of those terms refer to oral sex.

Can you contract an STD from the act?
Can you just do it openly in a crowded shopping mall and not get arrested?
Would you do it in front of your mother?
Is sex in the name?
I think yes, it is sex...
Exactly! I agree with the many others who have pointed out that "sex" takes many forms. If there was only one "type" of sex (even just speaking of intercourse) then how would we know if we were doing the "right" one?
By some of these definitions gay and lesbian couples can never have "sex"!

Ok, got it, neh, so if someone (nosey, eh?) wanted to know if you had any kind of sexual contact they would have to specifically ask you if you performed a sex act? Would that question, to you, include intercourse?

yes, it is. i strongly believe that anything you cant do in front of your spouse is cheating.
i remember my husband actually said that oral sex wasnt really "cheating." he was in the fog back then making excuses.

Yes, and not because I was being evasive
slight t/j H TT'd, I had to ask very specific questions to ensure I got answers that he couldn't "misinterpret" and not just about the sex

Yes it is.
If I ask "Did you have sex ?" and he replies no ...
then I find out he infact did have oral sex, he lied by omission.
When I say did you have sex, that means anything associated with sex ... i.e. oral SEX, intercourse, anal SEX, boob SEX ... hell if he used your feet it is SEX ... it's feet SEX ...
