Whew! Order placed. I'll let you guys know what I think about it. I'm a little leery of the Windows 8 OS, but maybe I'll get used to it without much hardship.
I'm excited-it's purple!!!
Thanks again for all the help.

You will probably get used to it, eventually, but it's really a PITA until you get used to it. Honestly if I could do it over, I'd go with the slightly cheaper Win7 b/c I dislike Win8 that much

Mama- I expect a big ole "told ya so" from you when I'm on here venting about it in a bit!
Seriously, it should be fine. I imagine it will take some getting used to.

I was trying to push Win7...not my fault it doesn't come in purple! And yes, it has a DVD+RW optical drive. I hope you enjoy it, and if you don't like Win8, there are a lot of third party apps to restore stuff like the start menu.

Tred- I know. I probably should've gone with a plain colored laptop with Win7 but I just couldn't resist the color! I'm a sucker for colorful.
ETA: and who knows? I might like it once I get used to it.

With what you're going to be using it for, you may not dislike it as much as I do

I am coming in here a little late...but I am an online student and just purchased the MS office professional package directly from the Microsoft web site. They offer students the software for $99 which is a great deal!
Good luck in school!

Got my shiny new purple laptop yesterday!
Windows 8 has me like this
for now! It's definitely going to take some getting used to. And in my defense, I didn't have much time to really get involved with playing with it.
I love it so far-it's really nice. It seems gigantic and it's kind of heavy, but I'm sure I'll get used to that as well.
Thanks so much for all the tips and suggestions. It all really helped, and I appreciated each of you taking time out to respond.

Awesome Abby! I have zero advice on Win 8, but I think 8.1 is coming out soon. There's probably plenty of online tutorials for it. I'm sure you'll be an old hand at it in no time. Congrats!

Okay! I'm super comfortable with my new laptop! I know you guys were just waiting with bated breath for my update!
I am posting on it right now! I can do this!
As an aside, I'm already getting grades back on submitted assignments, and so far I've gotten As!

Hlessons and I both have new laptops with the win 8 and we both hate it. Mostly because there is a glitch with the win 8 and the wi fi portion of it. You can get repeated issues with loading pages sometimes. We seem to have the biggest problems with this in one particular room in the house. This seems to be a known problem with the program.
I have the touch screen, I do like that part of the program.
I also do all online school, good luck with your classes
