I have a hodgepodge going all at once right now:

The Privileges by Jonathan Dee. I'm about halfway through and liking it but not sure if the second half will hold up.

Garlic and Sapphires by Ruth Reichl.

River Cottage Veg Every Day by Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall ( a cookbook).

On my kindle: Close Relations by Susan Isaacs.

I'm also re-reading Stephen King's On Writing, which I do every now and then. It's the best book about writing available, and since I'm a writer, reading it is kind of like continuing education :)

I agree. I love, love, love this book. I also really like to re-read Strunk & White, Elements of Style and Bird by Bird by Anne Lamott.

I just finished Anne Perry's "Treason at Lisson Grove" - first Thomas & Charlotte Pitt novel she'd written in 3 years!

I love these books, but haven't read one in forever. I'm definitely getting this one.

I poured through this thread last night and ended up buying "The Book Thief".

I'm reading The Book Thief, too, Meta.

About a third of the way in and it's really interesting. Love that Death is the narrator. Cool device.

I'm reading The Double Bind by Chris Bohjalian. Slow going...I'm going to keep at it because I think it's leading up to an interesting twist.

We shall see.

Hope..it is really interesting isn't it? I am a little further in now. His writing style is very unique. I don't know that I have ever read anything quite like this.

I finished Heaven is For Real last weekend and spent a busy work week not reading.

I walked into the library yesterday and walked around aimlessly.

I finally settled on Hunger Games and Interview With a Vampire.

I'm almost finished with Hunger Games. It's an easy read. I haven't been able to put it down.

Is Anne Perry any good? I saw Heavenly Creatures long before I ever heard of Anne Perry, so I always think of her as a winsome teen murderess a la Kate Winslet.

For Anne Perry fans - there is another William Monk novel out now! I just read the Pitt one a few weeks ago - W got this one on audio from the library.

Her books are so awesome.

Anne Perry is magnificent. Her mysteries are set in Victorian England (2 series, in different times of that period), and really bring that time absolutely to life, the various classes, from nobility, upper "white-collar" type classes, all the way down to the most desperately poor. Glittering paries come to life with wonderful descriptions of the garments worn at the time, and the awful rookeries of Seven Dials are the same, on the other end of the spectrum.

Her main characters are interesting, complex - they also evolve over the course of the series.

She also addresses the social issues of the times (often appropriate even today), including women's sufferage, attitudes towards rape, poverty, prostitution, the state of medicine at the time, the evolution of the profession of nursing, repercussions of the terrible mis-management of the military during the Crimean War, the colonization of Africa, etc.

I have re-read both series twice. They are wonderful.

You have to remember, she did her time way back when and is now in her 60s (or older).

FWW & I have gotten hooked by Patrick O'Brian's Aubrey-Maturin series. I heartily recommend starting with the first in the series, Master and Commander (not M & C, The Far Side of the World).

It's filled with sailing jargon, but that doesn't interfere with my enjoyment of the novels.

Watch for the malapropisms - like 'one fell sloop' - they're hilarious.

Finished The Book Thief, loved it.

Now reading Under the Banner of Heaven by Jon Krakauer about fringe Mormon Fundamentalist groups. Quite disturbing.

Funny you should ask... I was reading it on my e-reader and then it died I've only had the stupid thing for 4 months and they won't do anything about it because I lost the receipt

Anyway.. haven't been able to read The Book Theif. I bought "The Birth House" on vacation this weekend and read it all!! LOVED this book!!!!

I just finished reading a book called "The School of Essential Ingredients". If you are a foodie, this is a book for you.

Right now I am reading "South of Broad" by Pat Conroy.

I popped in some headphones and listened to "Beat the Reaper" by Josh Bazelle while doing some heavy deck cleaning and garden overhauling outside. NOT family friendly for car rides, etc., but a totally wild ride as a book. I cannot believe how fast time flew - the audio narrator is pure magic.

I just finished Unbroken by Laura Hillenbrand. Very gripping-the kind of book that leaves you emotionally drained and inspired at the same time.

What a story.

I just finished Thirteen Reasons Why by Jay Asher. It's a young adult novel about a teen's suicide. Excellent book and a great door opener for parents wanting to talk to teens about bullying, rumors and kindness.

I also read The Upside of Irrationality by Dan Ariely about his research in behavioral economics. Very thought provoking, especially in light of the country's economic situation in the last few years.

Now I'm reading How to Talk to Anyone by Leil Lowndes. Meh. Struggling to finish.
