Oh and I am in Alabama. The Deep South. The Bible Belt and all that. And honestly facial piercings are quite common, even here in backwater Alabama.

I have a tattoo in the middle of my back, and my ears are pierced one each. I don't mind tats or piercing on other people, but my awful sinuses make me say ick to nose piercings, and my dentist was always relating horror tales of complications due to tongue piercings. With my bad luck, I would be one of his statistics. I do have a fascination for pretty tattoos, and the leopard lady i think is quite beautiful.

Belle INSISTED on getting a tongue piercing as soon as she was old enough to not need my permission.
Yup, she cracked a tooth the first week.
I can't wait to see how these people look when they're old and the tattoos are sagging, faded....
I expect mine will be sagging and faded....just like the rest of me. And honestly, at that point I'll probably keep myself fairly well covered anyway.

I have no problem with either tatts or piercings even though I have neither. I had my ears pierced when I was a teen but let them close. As for tatts, I've seen some very nice, tastefully done ones. I've considered getting one myself but the memory of a schoolmate getting a home-done one (the thread wrapped needle and India ink type) literally carved out of her arm stops me from doing it.
My DD has three piercings in each ear and a nose piercing. The one on the nose is in the "corner" about where the wall of her nostril joins to her cheek and she wears a small, almost tiny stud.

I have 8 tattoos and my ears are pierced twice each. I like this thread because I can see how hypocritical I can be about tattoos and piercings: I don't like it when women have chest tattoos (with the exception of Danielle on American Pickers); I don't like facial or neck tattoos on anyone; I'm not a fan of gauged ears or facial piercings other than a cute nose piercing or an eyebrow - can't stand lip/cheek/center of the nose piercings.
As for tattoos getting faded, they can always be touched up (I had a couple of mine redone already - then again, some of my tattoos are nearly 25 years old).

The one thing I can't figure out is what's with the ear plugs that stretch the earlobe. Do people find that sexy/attractive?

I only have my regular ear piercing but in here rebellious stage DD19 had multiple piercings done. Collarbones, too many to count in each ear, above the lip, nose....My only "request" was no tongue and no gauges. She respected that and has neither.
She also has several tattoos that while I am not thrilled with all of her choices and I don't find them overly attractive she does have tat sleeves to cover them at work as a waitress.
I do notice them on other people because I am always thinking is that DD's next one?

I have four peircings on one ear, and three in the other, and my nose pierced. No tattoos.
But I'm always amused when people I have known for years notice I have my nose pierced. My brother noticed two weeks ago. I did it 7 yrs ago.

Not where I live in California. I think it depends on where you go and whom you associate with.
If you go to the mall on a Friday or Saturday evening you might see many; if you went to that same mall on a Saturday morning you'd probably see very few!
Plus at my age there are not many people with facial piercings or obvious tattoos.
I really don't mind the small ones but I definitely wouldn't do it and I wouldn't want my kids to do either.

Rollercoaster...
I know women older then you are who are just now getting pierced or have been pierced for years.
I had a very nice chat with a woman at the grocery store today about our various piercings and who we use in this area and who we liked and didn't like.
She was 60. She also had two tattoos and gave me a recommendation where to get work done if I wanted ink.
Tattoos and piercings, not "just" for the young anymore.

I’ve started assuming people have tattoos and/or piercings unless they say otherwise. They’ve begun to defy “type” as people of any age, gender, or status seem to have them no matter how conservative they may appear. I like them in theory, but can’t even commit to a pair of earrings for more than 3 days.

Exactly, Crescita. I am sure if you met me in person and I had my clear stud in (that is small enough you can't see unless you are specifically looking for it), you wouldn't know I had my nose pierced. For the most part, I am conservative and you wouldn't expect me to have piercings or tats

Very rarely do I see piercings here and I do see many young adults, most are in college and pretty clean cut. DC metro area is pretty conservative.
I lived in rural Alabama for a while and don't think I saw even one during the three years that we lived there.

Facial piercings are kind of over here in Minneapolis. The only people who still do it are the emo types who hang around Hot Topic all day. You rarely see them on anyone over 25. I have noticed that people are still really into gauged ears, though. A practice I personally think is icky.
Tattoos are so not a big deal. Everyone gets them- punks and soccer moms alike. There are at least 10 tattoo shops in my neighborhood. you'd pretty much have to be covered from head to toe with ink in order to stand out.

I have both my ears pierced twice...but I don't wear earrings.
I also have two tattoos. I want a third.
I would never get a facial/neck tattoo. I think that's career suicide. You can cover tattoos from the chest down, and no one would know you have them, but you can't hide them on your face or neck.
There are very conservative hiring managers out there would take one look at a facial tat and mentally say "Next!".
Facial piercings don't bother me that much on a personal level...Unless the piercings are the dominating feature of the person's face. Then I think you've gone too far!
My oldest brother had his eyebrow, both ears, and his labret pierced, all while he was in the army. He tatted himself up too, in a big way. Oddly enough it looks natural on him. My middle brother has no piercings, but tatted up when he joined the army, as well. *sigh* He got neck tattoos. He now wants to remove them because he's a civilian again and can't get anyone to take him seriously for a job.
All that said, to each his own. I think sometimes when you see someone who is covered in tats or piercings, that person MIGHT be a tattoo artist, or a piercing professional. They are "advertising" their work, per se.

No tattoos, and I've had my ears pierced about 3 times each because they always close up on me, so now I don't even bother.
