I have a Philips VAR (1200 I think) that I purchased online from Walmart. Regular batteries usually last about 2 days. There are other batteries that might give you a longer time. Right now I'm using some rechargeables that only give me about 26 hours of recording time. I'm not sure if the cold zaps them faster or if it's the rechargeables that are giving me less time. The noise reduction feature helps with road noise but it's still an issue under the seat. I would suggest a mic if you can hide it some where closer to him and away from the floor. Best to put the VAR somewhere it won't fall or slide out or that something can hit the buttons to turn it off.

The other issue is to find out laws in your state about recording others if you are concerned about that. In my state only one person has to know about it for it to be legal. I didn't know that when I started but since my WS found it at some point and never said anything then I count that as consent.

Hope this helps.

One other thing I wanted to add is that if your WS travels a lot during the week you may want to get two recorders. So you have one in the car and the other you can listen to. You can download it to a computer and put the recorder back in the car. However, This gets cumbersome to me to drag the laptop around with me so I prefer to listen to the recorder. This way I can listen to it on a walk or doing whatever I need to do and it's easier to conceal if I need to. Also, then you can have one in his car more consistently. At this point I only have one and i find this to be an issue at times because I only listen to it when he's at work and no ones around but that means more time that I don't have one in the car. Just another suggestion.

""Buy 2 sony ICDPX312 or ICDPX333 voice activated recorders. Best Buy sells them for like 50 bucks. DO NOT BUY a cheap VAR. SONY SONY SONY. USE LITHIUM batteries. We have examples of 25 hour recordings using them on these sony recorders. My icon here IS a Sony ICDPX312. No I do not have stock in nor work for Sony.

Setup instructions are on page 19. Also good stuff on page 31.

Use 44K bit rate for balancing file size vs quality DO NOT USE 8K!!!!! Simply put. The higher the quality the better the sound and 8K sucks. ALSO. The higher the quality the more you can manipulate the mp3 in Audacity.

Set VOR "on" see page 38

See page 40 for adding memory if necessary

Play with it yourself to get familiar. TEST IT OUT

Turn off the beep feature. Its on one of the menus. You can even play prevent defense by going to a dollar store, buying uber-cheapie earbuds, cut off the buds but put in the jack which will actually disable the speaker for additional protection.

Go to Walmart and buy heavy duty velcro.

This is one item: Velcro Heavy-Duty Hook and Loop Fastener VEK90117: Office : Walmart.com

also

Purchase VELCRO Hook and Loop Fasteners, Sticky-Back, for less at Walmart.com. Save money. Live better.

The velcro is usually in the fabric section or less often in the aisle with the fasteners like screws. The velcro pack is mostly blue with a yellow top. Clear pack shows the vecro color which is black or white.

Use the velcro to attach the var under her seat UP INSIDE. SECURE IT WELL!!!!!! So well even a big bump wont knock it off. attach one side HD velcro from Walmart to back. USE BIG PIECE

attach other side HD velcro again UP INSIDE car seat. ATTACH THE CRAP out of it. It needs to stay put going over big potholes or railroad tracks.

Put the second VAR in whatever room she uses to talk in when you are not around. If you are a typical man, use your size advantage to put it someplace she cant reach, even on a chair. Beware spring cleaning season if she does it.

I recommend exporting the sound files to your comp. The recorder is very cumbersome for playback.

Amazon has a pen VAR that can be placed in a purse or other small place to get remote conversations. Yes the pen works.

If you need clean up the recordings get Audacity. Its free from the internet. I have used it on var work for others here to remove things like engine noise. If needed, I have done var work for four men here. RDMU is the only one who has released some of the confidentiality.

Back in 2010 (my dday), while living in TX, I was actively using a VAR to record conversations with my WH as he answered my questions re: his disgusting A. During a conversation with a Texas attorney I asked if these taped conversations (where my WH admitted and gave a detailed account of his A) were legal and admissible in court. The attorney told me they were legal, they could be used in court, and that I had my WH by the balls (that's exactly what he said) given my WH is on tape admitting to the A. He proceeded to tell me that a taped conversation between 2 or more people, when I am not part of the conversation, is not admissible. I'm not sure if he told me that this was not legal. Regardless, it would not have stopped me from hiding a VAR in an attempt to gather evidence.

in R 10 years and it's working but he is putting 200% into it (as he should) to make it right again.

The truth hurts, but I have never seen it cause the pain that lies do.

I'm not really concerned about it being illegal to record someone without their permission in my state. The last time I checked, adultery and oral sex were illegal in many states. Lol!

This is sad and shouldn't even be necessary. I bought one online for $90. It didn't work at all. They sent me a replacement. That one doesn't work either. Now I have two that need to be sent back and still don't have the recorder I need. Hoping this post will give me better options.

I purchased a few VAR that look like a flash drive. It has the option of continual recording and voice activated. What I love about it is there is a 25 day stand by time, yes 25 days.

This works for me because I can put one in our vacation home, one in the office.... and so on. They work great. I can actually put it in the closet, top shelf, close the door and it picks up voices.

I used 2 Olympus VN-7200's. They worked great 3 day recording time with regular batteries, longer with lithium. I stopped using the VAR feature though and let them just run, swapping them out as needed. With the VAR feature I lost too much of the conversation as the recorder took a second or two to start recording. It has a "clock" feature, so I could match the recording time to cell phone records so I didn't have to listen to hours and hours of recording.

This may be a dumb question, but I've always wondered...if you put a voice activated one in the car, does it turn on if the radio is on? WS always listens to NPR and I never bothered with one because I didn't feel like listening to a recording of NPR.

I thought the same thing when it came to music. I then quickly realized that if she is on the phone, she will turn the radio down.

I recently bought the SONY ICD PX333 Digital Voice Recorder. I added a sim card to it and purchased some better batteries. So far so good and the clarity is great.
