Someone recently posted about something technical, stating that they were probably having extra trouble because they were using their phone - that they don't have a computer.

RIGHT!!! There are people in this world who do not have computers!!! How can so many businesses practically REQUIRE you to go to your account on their website to get anything done? What about those people who do not own computers???

The one that makes me the maddest...the DOCTOR!!! After my recent bloodwork, I get a recording on the phone saying that my results are in and I should look them up on my portal.

So I call the office and tell them I don't have a portal, and for something so important as understanding test results, I want to be called and spoken to by a doctor or at the very least...a nurse. So I can ask questions.

And kids in school...homework needing to be done with a computer, or needing a computer to be able to receive updates on school work from a teacher.

I do happen to have a computer, because my H wants to have one. But I can't stop wondering what these businesses / doctor's offices expect people to do when they don't have one.

Some people cannot afford a computer.

Some people cannot UNDERSTAND a computer. (me)

And some people want human connection. (me)

Does anyone else have something that is a pet peeve so that I can believe that I'm not just overreacting???

I’ve often wondered about students who don’t have access to a computer or smart phone. There’s definitely the assumption that everyone has access to reliable electronics and an internet connection.

For the blood work info, I could see maybe a medical assistant calling with results, or maybe a nurse, but not a doctor unless something is very wrong. In those cases, I expect to need a follow up appointment as there’s no reimbursement in lengthy phone calls to answer questions. For that, I would expect to need an in-person appointment.

I think I'm right there with you on this. Especially for school stuff.

The kids brought home permission forms first day for the online apps the teachers use to post stuff about what's going on in class, how to pay online for trips etc.

It's annoying. For one I dont have the phone space to load all these apps.

I may have a computer but internet up here is crappy...and expensive.

What pisses me off the most is that the school doesn't have a recycling program or healthy snack bins anymore due to funding and staffing BUT every kid in the school is getting a Chromebook to use in class....

Also my cell phone company has changed the phone call in. If I want to call and speak to a PERSON it's not possible. The automated service now says they will send me a text. Then the online assistant will open a window in Chrome and begin a chat. I have to state that I need a Rep. Then they schedule a call back...fml. ok so I hated talking to someone that barely spoke English and wasn't even in my country but at least it was a human and not a computer. Ugh!

🤣 I think that was me who said no computer. Mine crashed when we moved, and I can't afford to buy another one. My fch has one that I can use, but I find I can do everything I need on my phone or a tablet. I have no need for a computer.

But, yeah, I am especially annoyed with the doctor portal thing. I get emails that I have stuff in my portal. But, I can't login to my portal because I don't have a code or whatever. So, I still have to call the doctor's office to get the info I need for the portal. Might as well just talk to the nurse about my test results or whatever. My PCP does call me, but I think that's just her.

The online school stuff can be annoying. I, too, wonder about those kids who don't have computers or internet access. I guess it's expected that they can go to a library to do that stuff? That's how it was when the internet was new. Course, you need a way to get to the library. Everyone at our high school got laptops this year, not in middle or elementary school, though.

I do find being able to manage lunch accounts and reporting absences online convenient. What I don't understand is why one school in the same district has online access to such things while another does not. WTH?

I have a huge pet peeve with parents doing their kids school projects, homework and writing their papers.

Let kids create and do their own age appropriate work. Things should be a bit messy when done by an elementary school age child. I have seen some parents carry this behavior on to the college years scheduling their kids classes and practically doing their papers for them.

Parents have lost their minds. One of my friends was crying because her son got a C on a quiz.

With schools not teaching cursive anymore how can the next generations of kids learn to write their signatures?

Documents for mortgages, bank accounts etc still need a signature.

I'm still royally pissed off that times tables aren't taught anymore. DD brought home a chart and she uses that....back in my day you memorized each table.

Also.i think my.kids are some of the few that actually know how to tell time on an analog clock...

Worse about cursive, what about reading the actual handwriting of their grandparents' journals, diaries, stories? Cursive is an essential language skill, as far as I'm concerned.

I was very financially strapped when Wh and I were divorcing. Thank goodness I lived within walking distance to a library, where I could use their computers . I also didn’t have a car at that time so if I could not have walked there, it would have been no computer for me. My kids were going so they didn’t have school assignments... if they had, what a pain that would have been

My DH does not know how to use a computer, has a flip phone, and works in the trades. He gets along just fine. I do the "computer work" when necessary. Neither of us use portals for medical stuff - we request in-person appointments or a phone call - and a copy of any reports (I keep a <gasp> paper file of these.)

We were just talking the other day about schools taking cursive out of the curricula. How will my grandchildren sign shit? My DDs took it upon themselves to teach my grandkidlets cursive...my 10-year-old DGS actually writes nicer in cursive than in print!

It will all be electronic. A lot of things already are. You type your name and can choose from several cursive signatures.

Oh man that's just so sad.

Geez back in the day I recall not getting my Pen License because my cursive had a slant the teacher didn't like.... your writing had to be perfect.

Now it's a lost art.

Like calligraphy.

The more the world changes the less I like it.

The school I work in still teaches cursive starting in 3rd grade. I remember when handwriting was on the report card 😯

We are way to dependent on technology but for better or for worse it's NOT going away!

You can still get free TV, all the basic broadcast channels.

If public schools were only required to teach the basics, cursive would be taught. I never learned it much beyond a basic signature. Printing has always worked for me.

Schools teach about AIDS and other STDs, teach specialized history about Italian Americans, African Americans, women's history, Holocaust history and several others in addition to "regular world history. We are required to have class meetings to discuss social interactions, required to do ridiculous amounts of testing, and yes, teach keyboarding and basic computer use. We teach cyber safety, internet research with all the fact checking needed to evaluate information. Oh, and practice lock down drills, shelter in place drills, fire drills and active shooter drills all of which have slightly different protocols. This is in addition to reading, math, science etc.

Believe me, teachers are not driving this move to teach everything, which winds up being an inch high and miles wide. It insures a population who knows a little about a lot.

Computers help a little, allowing lessons to be set up in advance and worked through independently at ones own pace. It allows teachers to remotely monitor performance and progress. All the kids in our schools are given laptops although lower grades don't take them home. It's been a big help in another way, textbooks are uploaded on middle and high school computers saving money and saving the spines of kids who take their books home.

The issue of internet access is still problematic with some kids, contingency plans exist.

Computers inject a different need for rules, obviously, kids misuse them, the 2019 version of passing notes.

There is good and bad here.

As to doctors, I LOVE my portals, love that I don't have to hang in to a MUSAK recording for hours. I'm guessing I'm the minority here.

The one day I have the two older kids at the children's hospital for appointments, I got non stop calls from the school about classes being added (that had been previously cut) due to higher than expected enrollments. ALL.of my kids are being shuffled to new classes and teachers.

It's good. But the kids had already started to love their teachers and we had some tears (both from the kids finding out and the teachers while they told me on the phone).

I do not envy the job of a teacher! You all are amazing.

Lock down and hold in place drills are now as common as fire drills. So sad!

In return google will possibly influence the curriculum and what your children are taught.

They will also have every grade and all the details that your kids enter into that computer.

They will finish up with a huge database on all the kids who's schools take the Chromebook carrot.
