One week. I lasted one week. They asked me to put together a list of everything I had accomplished this week for a meeting this afternoon. I had a 2-page list OUTLINING what I was working on, and it wasn't enough.
Their reasons?
1) The owner asked me to send a fax; he gave me a fax # and a phone #--neither worked. I tried to send it several times; I even called the fax # from my phone (several times)--it was a message saying the mailbox was full--for a fax line
The owner came back in, said the #'s were ok, sent the fax himself. I was nonplussed.
His wife presented me with a marked up fax cover sheet (that I created) and was incensed that I'd sent it out that way. I explained that I had given the owner the printed sheet only--it was his handwriting on it and HE had sent the fax. I didn't check to see what # he sent it too, but I suspect he got a different # (something was written on the paper that needed to be faxed--she didn't let me see it;probably the correct #?)
I spent the first two days researching databases for their business, which I'm new to. I had made arrangements to sit with the title clerk to go over what she thought was absolutely necessary before I started calling for prices. The owners felt it wasn't enough. I had presented them with an example of an employee manual and she pointed that out as having expected more from me. I explained I did not create that document in the first week...
There were other inane, ridiculous reasons, but there was no arguing; I'm out.
I suspect they had someone else they wanted more on the hook for the job who just came through this week, but then, I'm paranoid.
If I get past the shock, I'm actually relieved. I realized by Wednesday that they would be impossible to please because they really don't know how to articulate how they want to run their business and would never be able to delegate. I figured I would do what I said I would do and look for another job. So here I go...

That's absolutely horrible. I guess the silver lining is that you won't be working for people who think it's OK to treat somebody like that.

That's horrible Sad, so sorry. Mojo your way to find something new quickly. I agree it is a silver lining that you won't have to work for these people. They sound quite incompetent and impossible to please.

Wow, is there anything you can do? You moved for this job, did they know that? It probably goes without saying, but if they can let you move across country for a job, and then they release you after a week, no empathy or values/concerns for anyone but themselves.
Sound familiar? You dodged a bullet. Maybe this is the way the universe got you to that city for something better!

Silver lining? They showed their true colors before you had too Mich of yourself vested in them.
Here's hoping you find an even better opportunity. Have you even had a chance to decide if you will stay in NY or somewhere else?
