Okay, that includes me. Seriously, can anyone recommend "public workout facility wear" that doesn't make it abundantly clear (to even the myopic casual observer) just exactly why you're at the gym? So much of what I see would look downright scary on anyone a pound heavier than an Athleta catalog model. I don't want to look like 10 cats in a bag from behind!

I haven't been to a gym in eons; I've got exercise machines at home and always did power-walking. However, I've had a long run of foot & knee issues that have kept me from walking or cycling, so now I'm thinking about joining one in order to do something for toning. The great thing about working out at home is wardrobing is a total non-issue.

Any tips on where to look and what to look for?

I am overweight and go to the gym. I wear yoga pants I got at Lane Bryant and t-shirts. I feel comfortable in that don't feel like I am advertising anything or that anyone is judging what I'm wearing.

I actually like the Danskin line at Walmart. Look for dark colors, fast wicking, and a little snug. If you go too loose you will chafe, and it will move around and be uncomfortable.

Honestly I wouldn't be too self conscious about what anyone else is thinking. When I'm at the gym I focus on my own workout and not banging the equipment around too much while I try to figure out how to use it

Target, Kohls, and Old Navy. Cheap and lots of sizes. If you aren't going to be doing something where chafing is an issue (like running a marathon), just get what supports and feels good. I wear yoga pants (long or cropped) and spandex-y pants, a sports bra, and a tank top. I lift, I run, I use the elliptical, and I also play hockey in the same stuff.

I like Danskins fitted capris personally. I got them cheap at Walmart. I always buy black because the hide all manner of "sin".

I pair that with a solid color tee-shirt. If you look for the Haines Just My Size they seem to fit a little looser. If that's what you want.

I've noticed at my gym that people dress in all different styles from wild to mild The senior citizens even just wear street clothes.

No one seems to pay much attention.

I buy my yoga pants from Costco. They are stretchy and keep everything where it belongs. The capris are nice for working out.

Ditto. This is exactly what I wear to the gym. when I was heavier I wore looser sweat type pants, but they were just so uncomfortable (heavy, bulky, droopy, hot) that I quickly switched to the Danskin spandex capris. If you feel self conscious, just pair with a long, somewhat loose tee in a fun color.

If you're looking for something easy, fun, VERY effective for weight loss, and a super way to meet new friends, I can't recommend Zumba enough. I lost 70 pounds and gained half a dozen great friends that way.

Thanks for the suggestions!

I don't need to lose (much) weight so much as tone up...though I'd be happy to dump the 15 pounds I've put on since my injuries stopped my aerobic exercise in its tracks. It's just that I've never liked snug-fitting clothes unless I was in really good shape. These days, I see people (younger, generally) that wear stuff I would be absolutely mortified wearing. Muffin tops (or much worse) with very form-following thin knit tops? Oh hell no!

gypsybird87, I have friends who really like Zumba; I think I'd like it. However, I'm still trying to come back from my injuries (including bilateral plantar fasciitis) so my goal at present is merely to do strength training in hopes of aiding my recovery and toning up.

Thanks again!

I usually wear yoga pants or baggy basketball type gym shorts, and a tshirt or exercise-y tank on top. When I get really overheated the tshirt may come off and be used as a sweat rag, so I'm sure that's fun for everyone around..or...not.

Basically go with whatever you're comfortable in!

I always wore old tshirts, and running shorts.

I never did splurge on the workout gear. I went to a Y though so definitely no competition to be the cutest one there. Plus I don't give a flying fig what anyone thinks.....

I do spend good money on sports bras though, and purchase those at a local running store.

Add me to the group of Walmart shoppers. Dark capri workout pants, and right now they have these loose fitting tank tops that are awesome. I do Zumba, and in about every class there are 3-5 other women wearing the exact same thing, just different colors.

I like the Champion C9 shorts with the built-in undies that you can get from Target. I usually get my workout shirts there too, in a wicking fabric. I like the Nike and Reebok running shorts in the same style as well, but the C9 brand is cheaper. I usually wear tank tops that are fairly loose.

I have several of these:

And I got this one in the store on clearance the other day and I feel cute in it. And snagged a compliment from the hubs as well while wearing it.
