A friend of mine went through vet school with all sorts of interesting things in her fridge and freezer. I remember the time she told me to get out the ice trays from a deep freeze in her garage and I had to lift up a (plastic-wrapped) horse head. We'd go to Asian markets together to buy things like pig's feet and chicken's feet so she could practice.

I'm a true-blue animal lover, but it never bothered me. Human specimens, I think I'd have a problem with, but animals? Well, you need to learn it somewhere.

I cannot wait til your son and her have their first argument about the bodies littering the place. Talk about your New Jersey stereotypes!

Oh Yuck! I cannot even begin to imagine getting a cat corpse in the mail....

So, D, after she dissects the cat, does she have to mail it back to the school to get graded on it? Just wondering.

Thren,

I can only imagine my son's and my ex-wife's reaction to all this.

On a more serious note, I give my daughter tremendous credit. She has come a very long way, and decided to take one of the hardest courses in school, and to face some pretty gruesome tasks in order to complete it.

She's been on the Dean's list, top honors, every semester.

I am very proud.

To answer a couple of the questions/comments...

Even in the medical field, you still dissect a cat. The anatomy of a cat is very similar to the anatomy of a human The main things she will probably have to dissect out are muscles and major organs.

They usually get the cats from the pound. They are the one's that have been euthanized.

Tell her not to be surprised if they also send her a pig heart, a cow eye and/or a sheep's brain When I was in A&P, we had to dissect a cat, a cow eye, a sheep's brain and learned the vein's/arteries of the heart using a pigs heart Fun times!

I cannot imagine what motivated my daughter to decide that anatomy was a great course to take.

And I am sure she is going to deal with just a little bit of nausea during this whole semester.

God bless her. Hope she makes it!

Ah, anatomy. Fun fun times.

We did cat, shark, pig fetus, owl, fox, baby chick.

The hardest was when we had to have fresh killed ones to watch the veins and arteries...I had to leave the room with those. I learned at that point I could never work with a vet.

The dead animal part doesn't bother me. I loved A & P. My first thought was "oh my! the smell!! The whole house is going to reek of preserved dead cat!!" LOL!! One of the cats we opened up was pregnant. That was pretty cool!!

I took Anatomy as a HIgh School honors course, and we had to do the "Dissect the cat for entire semester" project.

Fortunately, it was NOT at home. I can't even imagine that !! The smell of Formaldehyde was overpowering!!

But warn your daughter, Defiance.. we also came across many of the cats were pregnant, and that really tore people up. The instructor made them open up the uterus to expose the kittens.. :(

really mailing a dead cat ???

that is gross and completely unecessary.

Surely her neighbourhod has a cat or two?

Must remeber to never allow any dependents to do anatomy via correspondence school.

I am sure my daughter is going to have a very rude awakening with this.

And she may decide it's not for her.

But I give her a lot of credit. She has come a long way. And she is trying to do things that stretch the limits of what she thinks (or used to think) she is capable of.

To me, that shows great determination.

And even if she barfs and freaks out and decides this is not for her, at least she will have given it a shot.

Me?

In HS A & P class we did the cat, sharks head, sheep's brain, and something else I can't recall right now.

In AP Biology we did the fetal pig. I didn't take the AP test so I had to repeat Freshman Bio in College... and did the fetal pig again. Thanks to me, my jock lab partner aced the lab and the exam. I got roses!!

Anatomy is for vets and pre-med students.

Neither of which could I in any way handle.

That is why I prefer to shoot pictures of living animals, with cameras.
