Jrazz honey. Stop and take a deep breath.

Your kiddo will be just fine with that combo, and probably get some much needed rest. When my kids were small I had one that would respond to motrin, and one that would respond to Tylenol, and when they would both get sick (2.5 years apart) I could never keep it straight. So I would give them both a dose of one, wait 40 minutes and give the dose of the other to the one with the fever still.

The flu in little ones is horrid experience. Remember it's a virus, and although it's bad, it OFTEN leads to an ear infection, or bronchitis, or even pneumonia. Keep a close eye on how she's feeling.

Oh and that pharmacist/ or Med Tech (I am betting) needs a stern talking to from their boss. Fuck them, if they want to go the all natural approach and not give their kids meds that's their choice, but HOW DARE they question/judge your parenting. That really pisses me off. You aren't upset enough already? REALLY????

Oh and BTW when in doubt always always always call poison control, from everything to meds, to bug bites, those folks rock. Expect to get a follow up call later today, and tomorrow to check on her status as well. I know that's what the one in my area does.

(((Jrazz and little J.))))

I hope you both start feeling better soon.

I am floored that the pharmacist/tech lectured you! Like you're not already stressed enough, let's just pile an extra serving of guilt on top of the mommy guilt/uncertainty you already felt.

I hope BabyRazz gets better soon. Viruses are the suck.

Thank you so much friends. She slept like crazy this morning which was great, and seems to be doing really well now.

I really appreciate your support. It's amazing to have this place to come to.

Hugs to all. (Or sanitized high fives would probably be best for now... )

I didn't see this until now and am glad you got answers and reassurance.

I've "layered" meds with my kids often since it works well for them (and I've had an ok from a doc I trust).

I tend to not always tell some medical "professionals" this because of judgement and conflicting info.

Hugs to you Mama J and I hope your little darling is feeling better very soon.

Jrazz I hope you're DD is feeling better?

I have 2 young children and my youngest. 21 months DD is always ill. She has had a horrendous cough and flu these last few days and hasn't been able to sleep with the coughing.

Then yesterday I remembered reading about rubbing vicks vapo rub into the soles of her feet and covering them with socks at bedtime to stop the cough. Low and behold she didn't cough once last night!

I don't think this is just coincidence and I would highly recommend it to see if it will help your daughter rest during the night. I know how difficult it is when you have a poorly child. For me the lack of sleep becomes such an issue and really stops my DD's body from healing from rest.

I also find steam inhalations with olbas oil in a hot shower room and elevating her cot helps deal with congestion.

Sending your DD lots of get well soon light.

Also, if she is prone to flu's and mucous build up have you thought about removing dairy from her diet as it can cause so many problems if her system is not agreeing to it?

I think it's time to change pharmacies.

I'm glad VRazz is sleeping. I hope she gets to feeling better soon. I've always been in the camp of giving Motrin and decongestant as often as possible. There is enough safety factor in those dosage recommendations that I really doubt you could hurt her.

Thank you so much everyone.

We have absolutely cut dairy out until this is over. That always makes a huge difference.

I was using a decongestant at night historically, but I noticed a significant correlation between her taking them and nightmares... even if she got them early. (This is with the pediatrician's guidance.)

She's doing pretty well today. Lots of coughing but fever keeping lowish on its own.

((((J))))

This reminded me of a time when my kiddos were 2.5 years and 5 months and both had RSVP and we were living with my MIL and H was working 12 hour days. I was sleep deprived an those babies were sick as hell. It was awful. The day I had decided to take DS to the hospital, he finally stopped running high fevers and ate some Popsicles. He was dehydrated and pitiful. My DD was just and infant and sicker than him. I remember sitting on the floor in the living room and just crying and crying. I had about 4 hours of sleep in 2 days.

Good news is we all survived and I realized that even though my troubles were awful and I was exhausted I was lots better off than all those mommas that were at the hospital with their babies.

I hope you can get a good 4-5 hours of sleep and the little razz is on the mend soon.

Just for future reference Tylenol (acetaminophen) and Motrin (ibuprofen) are metabolized in different organ systems. BH and I have frequently given them at the same time for fever or moderate - severe pain with good results. Just make sure you don't give two doses of the same med too close together. 4 hours between Tylenol doses and 6 hours between Motrin.

You probably gave her some good rest by doing that. And your pharmacist is an idiot.

ETA: BH is an MD and I'm an RN.

Thanks tushnurse. Did I mention we have an ant infestation on top of all of this? I'm about at my limit. Crazz gets back from China tomorrow. Trying not to spontaneously combust.

That's exactly what the Poison Control guy said, kbff. You may just have signed up for a future panic PM.

Kidding. Mostly.

Jrazz,

Late to this, but what tush said. She CAN have both, at the same time. Yes, there are other ways to help with a temp, and a temp is good b/c it's the body's way of fighting the infection, but if she needs the meds to be comfortable then do it. Hope everyone is feeling better soon!

I'm so sorry I missed this post. Taking them together is fine. They both last about four hours so the alternating is just keeping some fever reducer on board while not overdosing on either.

That pharmacist you talked to is a damn idiot. Please don't ask that person any more questions.

And PLEASE PM me if you are ever that scared. I check quickly for messages when I don't have time to "browse" for medical questions.
