My parents had 5 of us and had decided to NOT name us after any family members so they picked a name they liked that was not associated with family "Wendy".....my middle name is "Marian"...my Dad always said it was after "Maid Marian" Robin Hood's girlfriend...he was born and raised in Nottingham.....
ExH and I carried on the tradition and did not pick family names for our two kids...gave them each their own first and middle names because we liked them and for no other reason.....

My first name was just because they liked it. But I got stuck with two middle names after each grandmother. I was the first girl born on my dad's side since 1912 and his mother was insistent that I be named after her. My maternal grandmother said no way because my mother was named after her mother and she wanted to continue the tradition so the fight was on! The compromise was to throw both names in the middle with an unrelated first name. My paternal grandmother always gloated though because her name came before my maternal grandmother's. My parents said they did that because it "flowed" better, but I think it was really to shut my paternal grandmother up!

I was named after my mom's half sister, she turned out to be my favorite aunt, now just to add confusion, it really wasn't her name, it was the name she choose for herself when she was a teenager cause she didn't like her given name, my grandmother named all her kids 6 boys and 3 girls really weird names, some of them have rhyming first and middle names
My son I named him after family, named after my dad, middle name after my grandfather, 2nd middle name after my brother, which also was my other grandfather's name
My daughter was named after a soap opera character that I loved, unfortunately her middle name was after the monster in law,

When my sister was born, my parents couldn't agree on a name. That was in the time when the dads didn't go into the delivery room.
So, they shelled some lady out that my dad thought was my mom. He actually gave her a kiss, and the nurse said "congratulations, Mr. Kelly".
Yup, my sister is named Kelly.

I don't really know why my name was chosen but it was definately meant to be...
I was adopted at birth and my adopted parents named me. My birth parents who had never seen nor touched me and never knew anything about where I went, called me the exact same name!!!
I found out when I met them at 32 years old.

I was supposed to be a boy, with the initials JJ...alas, the ultra sound was wrong.
I have 3 aunts, so they smashed 2 together for my first name, and one as my middle.
Ironically its actually the birth name of a VERY VERY famous female part of a very famous duo (one is still living the other had an accident).

My mom wanted to name me Samantha Jo, but my dad didn't like it. The ONLY name they could agree on was the one they named me...after a Soap Opera star
There were numerous little girls, from the 80's, with the same name; I ALWAYS had at least one person in my class with the same name and now I work with someone (about 10 years younger) with the same name. When I meet people, however, they say I look like a, "Jennifer," which is my sister's name (and we do look similar)

I was named after a rather buxom starlet with a unique spelling for a common name.
Trust me, all I got out of the deal was the unique spelling.

My middle name was supposed to be my first name. My parents were searching for a good middle name for me when a coworker of my father had a baby girl. Dad liked the name his coworker had given his daughter, so he mentioned it to my mom. It sounded funny as a middle name, so they switched the order.

I named my DS after family... his first name is my dad's middle name and his middle name is my deceased brother's middle name.
It fits him.
FWSO was named after his father.

All the men in my family tend to pick family names- even me, I didn't wan to be the one to break the tradition.
With a baby boy due in November, we're back picking again!
My daughter is named after my SIL.
I like quite traditional names and I think family names are a nice touch.

My parents gave me an extremely obscure Gaelic name I can't find in any database.
I've always used the Anglicized version because nobody can pronounce the Gaelic, but it's great for passwords.
I guess that makes me special

My parents had a young man living with them before I was born...I think he was a friend of my mom's youngest brother. He ended up dying in a motorcycle accident. But I was named after his girlfriend...they thought it was a pretty name.
I am not a fan of it, though...it gets misspelled constantly.

I'm number 5 out of 6 kids. Mom wanted to name me Beth, a short version of her name but dad won out and I am named after a famous ice skater from the 60's. Her first and last name are my first and middle. I always hated it and wish I'd been a Beth.

I was supposed to be Becky. for hundreds of years, the name and others forms of it, has been passed down and oddly married into on my fathers side of the family. looking at our family tree it looks like the transcriber had a serious form of tourettes. "John married Becky and brought forth a child named Becky, who was preceded by a sister named Becky." I kid you not.
on his way to the hospital, he bought mom flowers. he named me after the lady that sold him the flowers...NOT Becky
. he said he liked the Spanish translation of the name.
at the time, it was not a popular name, and growing up, I never met anyone with the same name.
he did push for Becky when dd was born
.
I think having an unusual name growing up influenced naming dd a unique first name an an "old" middle name as tribute to my maternal grandmother (no, not "Spatula Rebecca").
when the boys were born, dd got to pick their first names, with our approval, and we chose very traditional middle names. all the unfoundlings have the same first initial, are all non traditional names, and fit them each perfectly.
