Hello Friends,

SMY and I just read of Skan's unexpected passing. We are both saddened; however, SMY is really having a hard time with this, the fragility of life really hitting home (for both of us).

Last Tuesday morning, at 5:30, I awakened to him having a seizure; He exhibited all the symptoms of a general seizure; it lasted for several minutes; nothing has ever happened like this before; I called 911, paramedics arrived within minutes, and worked on him. He was totally unaware, in "fear" mode, and had to be sedated for transport, and kept heavily sedated all day. CT scan was normal, as was bloodwork, etc. He didn't recognize me until late afternoon; has no recall of events. Smy kept asking the same questions. Five minutes later he asked again; didn't remember what my answers had been. Very sleepy, which is normal, apparently. He was kept overnight in hospital and released at noon the following day. Doc scheduled EEG, and sent a referral to a neurologist in eastern Ontario (office will not confirm an appointment until they receive EEG results).

We just returned from a nearby small city for the EEG. In two weeks he will stay overnight at our local hospital for a sleep apnea test.

He stops breathing a few times a night. I have to gently shake him to start breathing; he's been doing this for years.

Unfortunately, it takes something like this and how it can turn life sideways in an instant.

Of course, he has had his drivers licence suspended; it may take 6 months or more for reinstatement. Wait times for a neurologist is 3+ months.

He has lost his appetite; sadly, I see him changing before my eyes.

So, please, I ask you for your prayers and support for SMY.

Thank you all.

~ lf

Oh goodness.

In the US even with a known reason for the cause (like a new med) it is still a 6 mos min for no driving. I just recently had an employee go through this and it was clearly caused by a med.

That said if he has true OSA (obstructive sleep apnea) then he needs more than a breathe right strip. I know in Canada there can be extremely long wait times. If you have a dentist you may want to call and see if they sell an oral appliance that you can start using immediately.

OSA is nothing to mess around with and can be cause of things more dangerous than seizures. Be your own advocates and push your dr. Lastly if they started him on Keppra it is renowned for causing mood and personality changes.

Wow, so sorry to read this, lf. I hope he does get a diagnosis of OSA because that will happen soon and is easy to treat and hopefully as soon as they find it.

Hard to believe license suspension is automatic with a seizure. I know someone who was told it would be suspended depending on the diagnosis, which in that case, did not happen because they gave it a different diagnosis. Maybe depends on the jurisdiction?

Please tell SMY we are thinking of him and sending hugs, MOJO for a good outcome and love.

Thank you all for your support. It's greatly appreciated. We're hoping this seizure was a one-off event.

Turns out SMYs younger brother has been using a CPAP machine for 5 years for OSA.

Sleep apnea overnight clinic on the 25th.

He sees the sleep apnea clinic doctor for the results in the morning of the 27th; he may be looking at using a CPAP machine.

I have booked family doctor appointment on the 27th in the afternoon to discuss EEG results from today/next steps.

A major goal for him is to get his licence reinstated; here in Ontario that may take up to 30 business days after a doctor gives the ok. But which doctor? That is the frustrating part for us. The ER doc faxed in the suspension, but he was only filling in for a colleague (he has his own practice in town). Will it be up to our family doctor? She is on holiday until the 24th. Is it up to the sleep apnea clinic doctor? SMY sees him, as I said, on the 27th.

Our health care system, OHIP, has always been great, IMO. A wait time of 3-6 months for a specialist (non-emergency) is within normal expectations. But we're also looking at the summer with medical holidays, too.....

Tushnurse: we will push hard for answers, rest assured! The last thing SMY wants is to be on a prescription drug. Lots to research!

Re: licence suspension

In Ontario a doctor must report a seizure, regardless of cause to the MTO.

A written notice is mailed to patient. Not yet received here; however, according to my police officer nephew, if SMY is caught driving, his vehicle will be impounded. After formal notification in writing, and caught driving, he's looking at major $$$$ in fines.

So, I am the designated driver!

The MTO (Ministry of Transportation of Ontario) will review reinstatement once the doctor recommends this.

Holding you in the LIGHT...oh my. Apnea is very frightening. My husband actually stops breathing to the point where it wakes me up (interruption of the snoring) He doesn't like the cpap machine and doesn't often use it.

Btw, waits for many specialists here, on the east coast US, near a major city with some excellent hospitals is often 3-6 months. It can be very frustrating.
